Wombat Interview #5 – LàGoon

Wombat Cult a traversé l’Atlantique, chaussé ses plus belles skateshoes, assemblée sa board Baker, ses trucks Independant, ses roulements Reds et ses roues Spitfire pour flamber l’asphalte à grands coups de fuzz avec LàGoon.

Wombat Cult has crossed the Atlantic, put on its most beautiful skateshoes, assembled its Baker board, its Independent trucks, its Reds bearings and its Spitfire wheels to blaze the asphalt with great fuzz blows with LàGoon.

Wombat Cult: Jusqu’à l’année dernière, vous étiez un duo de power doom punk, peux-tu présenter le groupe depuis votre création ?

LàGoon: Le groupe a commencé en 2017 avec moi à la guitare et au chant et Brady Maurer à la batterie. Brady et moi nous sommes rencontrés à l’université et nous nous sommes rendus ensemble à Portland après avoir été diplômés. Les années en tant que duo ont été formidables, mais il était temps de s’étendre, de s’agrandir !

Wombat Cult: Vous êtes maintenant un groupe de trois musiciens. Comment s’est déroulée l’arrivée d’Ignacio De Tommaso, bassiste de Luciferica, au coeur de LàGoon ?

LàGoon: Ignacio, de Luciferica, a sorti de la musique sur les deux labels chez qui nous sommes signés (Forbidden Place & Interstellar), donc nous connaissons nos travaux mutuels depuis quelques années. Avec le temps, nous sommes devenus des amis proches. Ignacio et moi avons également travaillé sur un autre projet, The Crooked Whispers, donc quand j’ai voulu ajouter de la basse à l’album, il était la première personne qui m’est venue à l’esprit.

Wombat Cult: Depuis le début de l’année, vous avez sorti deux albums, vous êtes particulièrement productif, comment marche votre processus créatif ?
Continuez de cette incroyable manière, ce serait fou d’avoir un troisième ou un quatrième album pour conclure 2020 !

LàGoon: J’écris constamment et j’ai un studio d’enregistrement chez moi, donc j’enregistre généralement les morceaux au fur et à mesure que je les écris. Ces deux derniers albums se sont réunis très rapidement, et je suis un grand partisan de la sortie de musique au fur et à mesure de la composition, c’est donc ce que nous avons fait et continuerons de faire !

Wombat Cult: Father Of Death, votre nouvel album, a trouvé l’alchimie parfaite avec les genres que vous utilisez entre Doom, Punk, Stoner et Psychedelism. Quelles ont été vos principales influences lors de la composition de ce nouvel album ?

LàGoon: Pendant l’écriture de cet album, j’écoutais beaucoup d’albums de la fin des années 80 avec des groupes comme The Butthole Surfers, The Pixies, The Stooges, & Sonic Youth.

Wombat Cult: La différence entre Father Of Death et MAA KALI TRIP, est fabuleuse, vous nous donnez deux albums, avec des chansons bien écrites et des productions différentes! Où avez-vous enregistré ces deux albums? Quelles étaient les conditions?

LàGoon: J’ai mixé et masterisé les deux albums, mais nous les avons enregistrés de différentes manières.
MAA KALI TRIP a été enregistré à The Locker à Portland, OR dans un format plus live et laissé dans un format plus brut pour s’adapter au concept de l’album.
Les parties de Father of Death ont été enregistrées séparément par tous les membres du groupe pendant la quarantaine, puis mixées et masterisées dans mon home studio.

Wombat Cult: LàGoon, est souvent représenté avec le symbolisme de la faucheuse et la culture skateboard. Toutes vos œuvres sont conçues par différents artistes, pouvez-vous nous parler de votre inspiration visuelle et de la façon dont vous choisissez l’artiste pour créer vos créations?

LàGoon: Toutes nos images sont inspirées d’anciennes affiches de films d’horreur et d’art autour de la culture skateboard. Ce sont des choses en dehors de la musique qui m’inspirent vraiment, alors j’aime les avoir liées à notre musique.
Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance de trouver un si grand artiste au fil des années. Nous sommes revenus à Amplified Design pour ce nouvel album. Il est un bon ami à nous de Denver, CO et a réalisé les illustrations de notre album, The Unwelcome. Il était le choix évident quand le moment est venu pour nous de représenter le Father Of Death.

Wombat Cult: Comment travaillez-vous pour l’écriture des paroles ? Avez-vous des messages importants à envoyer ?

LàGoon: Toutes les paroles que j’écris concernent des moments que je traverse dans ma vie personnelle ou des histoires qui m’ont inspiré d’une manière ou d’une autre. J’aime avoir une connexion personnelle avec les paroles que j’écris.

Wombat Cult: La culture du skate semble être une clé fondamentale pour accéder à votre univers.
Peux-tu nous parler de cette sphère underground? Peux-tu nous donner quelques inspirations comme de la musique, des vidéos de skate ou des films qui influencent vos albums?

LàGoon: J’ai grandi en passant toutes mes journées au skatepark et j’ai tiré la plupart de mes influences musicales des vidéos de skate. Toutes les vidéos de Baker, Deathwish et Shake Junt étaient énormes pour moi en grandissant.
L’une de mes favoris de tous les temps est la vidéo 88 Footwear Destroy Everything Now. C’est là que j’ai entendu les Dead Boys pour la première fois.

Wombat Cult: Maintenant que vous avez signé chez Forbidden Place Records et Interstellar Smoke Records, peux-tu nous parler de cette collaboration? Comment s’est passée la rencontre avec ces deux labels?

LàGoon: Nous travaillons avec Forbidden Place Records depuis plus d’un an et avons récemment signé avec Interstellar Smoke Records.
Nous sommes entrés en contact avec eux deux en leur envoyant de la musique et heureusement ils l’ont aimée. Ces deux labels ont énormément contribué à bâtir notre base de fans et nous sommes vraiment fiers de faire partie intégrante de leurs familles!
En dehors de cela, les deux labels appartiennent à de vrais fans de musique underground et, plus globalement, il s’agit des meilleures personnes que nous ayons rencontrées.

Wombat Cult: Pour finir, nous sommes à la fin du premier semestre 2020. Avez-vous de nouveaux disques, des groupes à recommander ?!

LàGoon: Mec, il y a eu des albums incroyables jusqu’à présent cette année. Quelques-uns de mes préférés sont les nouveaux albums d’Ash Eater, Sorcia, Grim Earth, Jointhugger, Merlock et Serpent Cobra.

Wombat Cult: Until the last year, you were a power doom punk duo, can you introduce the band since your creation?

LàGoon: The band started in 2017 as myself on guitar and vocals and Brady Maurer on drums. Brady and I met in college and just happened to both move to Portland after graduating. The years as a two piece were great, but it was time to expand!

Wombat Cult: Now you are a three piece band, How the introduction of Ignacio De Tommaso from Luciferica has arrived?

LàGoon: Ignacio’s other hand, Luciferica, has released music on both labels we are signed to (Forbidden Place & Interstellar) so we’ve been familiar with each other’s work for a few years. Over the years we’ve become close friends. Ignacio and I have also been working on another project, The Crooked Whispers, so when I wanted to add bass to the album he was the first person in mind.

Wombat Cult: Since the beginning of the year, you offer two albums, you are particularly productive, how does it work your creative process?
Please continue in that crazy way, it will be insane to have a third or a fourth album to conclude 2020!

LàGoon: I’m constantly writing, and I have a recording studio in my home so I usually record the tunes as I write them. These last couple albums came together really quick, and I’m a big believer in releasing music as you make it, so that’s what we’ve done and will continue to do!

Wombat Cult: Father Of Death, your new album, found the perfect alchemy with the genres that you use between Doom, Punk, Stoner and Psychedelism. What were your main influences during the composition of this new album?

LàGoon: During the writing of this album I was listening to a lot of albums from the late 80s by bands like The Butthole Surfers, The Pixies, The Stooges, & Sonic Youth. 

Wombat Cult: The difference between Father Of Death and MAA KALI TRIP, is fabulous, you give us two albums, with good written songs and different production!
Where have you record these two albums? What were the conditions?

LàGoon: I mixed and mastered both albums, but we recorded them in different ways. MAA KALI TRIP was recorded at The Locker in Portland, OR and was recorded in a more live format and left in a more raw format to fit the concept of the album.
The parts for Father of Death were recorded separately by all the band members during quarantine, and then mixed and mastered in my home studio.

Wombat Cult: LàGoon, is often represented with death symbolism and skateboard culture. All your artworks are designed by different artists.So can you speak to us about your visual inspiration, and how you choose the artist to create your designs?

LàGoon: All our imagery is inspired by old horror movie poster art and skateboard art. These are things outside of music that really inspire me, so I like to have them tied in with our music. We’ve been really lucky to find such great artist over the years.
We went back to Amplified Design for this new album. He’s a good friend of ours from Denver, CO and did the artwork for our album, The Unwelcome. He was the obvious choice when it came time for someoneto portray the Father Of Death.

Wombat Cult: How do you work for the writing of lyrics? Have you some important messages to send ?

LàGoon: All of the lyrics I write are either about moments I’m going through in my personal life or stories that have inspired me in one way or another. I like to have a personal connection the lyrics in one way or another.

Wombat Cult: Skate culture seems to be a fundamental key to access to your universe.
Can you speak to us about this underground sphere? Can you give us some inspirations like music, skate videos or movies which influence your albums?

LàGoon:  I grew up spending all my days at the skatepark and got most of my music influences from skate videos. All the Baker, Deathwish, and Shake Junt videos were huge for me growing up. One of my all time favorites is the 88 Footwear video Destroy Everything Now. That’s where I first heard the Dead Boys. 

Wombat Cult: Now you signed at Forbidden Place Records and Interstellar Smoke Records, can you give us a word about this collaboration?
How was the meeting with these two labels?

LàGoon: We’ve been on Forbidden Place Records over a year now, and recently signed with Interstellar Smoke Records. We came in to contact with both of them by sending some music over to them and luckily they dug it.
These two labels have had a huge hand in building our fan base and we couldn’t be happier to be apart of their families!
Aside from that, both labels are owned by true fans of underground music and overall some of the best people we’ve met.

Wombat Cult: To finish, we are at the end of the first 2020 semester. Have you some new records, bands to recommend?!

LàGoon: Man, there have been some amazing albums so far this year. A few of my favorites are new albums from Ash Eater, Sorcia, Grim Earth, Jointhugger, Merlock, & Serpent Cobra.
