Let Them Hang est une formation de Death Metal suédoise mêlant rythmiques D-Beat et Mid-tempos. Avec « Ossuary », le groupe propose son premier album, après deux démos ayant échappé aux griffes de Wombat Cult.
Pour ce passage dans la cour des grands avec ce premier LP, le groupe rejoint le label Majestic Mountain Records. Bien loin des sommets aériens d’un Saint Karloff, ou bien du voyage rétro-érotique de Devil’s Witches, Let Them Hang est cette carte insoupçonnée et sans concession, que dégaine le label spécialisé dans la célébration de l’ultra-riff à base de fuzz.
Oubliez donc la lente décomposition sonore de la scène Doom, couchez le soleil aride qui inonde la scène Stoner. Let Them Hang est ici pour jouer de la corde, faire le noeud, serrer la nuque, briser l’échine, retourner la terre, et nous ensevelir six pieds sous terre avec frénésie et assurance.
L’artwork de ce « Ossuary », réalisé par Arjen Kunnen, d’une ténébreuse sobriété, sonne le glas, reposant sur les bases et concepts définissant le groupe : Un fond noir, pour l’obscurité enivrante de l’album, des jambes suspendues au corps et visage non apparents, rappelant le caractère répétée de l’exécution et le caractère régulier et habituel de la mise à mort sonore par le groupe, et enfin ces pieds meurtris, affirmant toute la crasse et la violence dont la formation sait faire preuve. Le corps était la lumière qui donnait sa lueur aux abysses, la mort est passée, il ne reste plus que souffrance et désolation. Il ne reste plus qu’à laisser au temps de recouvrir ces derniers petits éclats, et ouvrir les portes du néant, un cauchemar d’une beauté macabre dont Let Them Hang se fera le guide.
Autour de l’image du pendu, on ne peut cesser de penser aux pochettes cultes de groupes tels que Nails et Forgotten Tomb. Cependant, Let Them Hang, officie loin de ses camarades de cordes qu’ils soient spécialisés dans le Grindcore pour Nails ou bien le Depressive And Suicidal Black Metal pour Forgotten Tomb.
Le groupe suédois n’a pas froid aux yeux et se jette dans la gueule du Death Metal abrupte, réputé dans son pays, à la quête d’une radicalité similaire à celle que cherchait un certain Entombed, il y a trente ans de cela.
Allumez vos enceintes, écoutez le doux ronronnement de la Boss HM2. Dès les premières rotations du vinyle, la saveur est donnée. Let Them Hang joue avec fureur, ne prenant pas de détour. Ils ne sont pas là pour discuter, philosopher ou faire des prisonniers mais bien plutôt pour affirmer leur redoutable position sur la scène suédoise.
Le morceau d’ouverture, « Empire Of Molten Bones, nous rappelle les frissons que l’on avait pu ressentir lors des premières écoutes de « Hand Left Path » d’Entombed.
Néanmoins, il serait triste de découvrir ce « Ossuary » à travers une nostalgie latente, tant la formation ne cesse de démontrer son identité propre, mêlant les sonorités Death Metal à ses rythmiques D-Beat effrayantes de par leur efficacité.
Dès les premières notes d' »Empire Of Molten Bones », le constat est indéniable, une alchimie très particulière opère entre les membres du groupe. Un groove dévastateur prend place sur les neuf morceaux de l’album dont cette ouverture est un fort bel accueil en la matière.
Les trente-cinq minutes filent à toute vitesse ne nous laissant jamaisle temps de souffler mêlant rythmiques endiablés et mid-tempos poisseux. Notre répit arrivera lorsque le dernier accord aura cessé de résonner, sur un Goat Star final ayant tout l’air d’un portail vers les enfers.
Les paroles du groupe ne sont que souffrance et désolation. Il semble, à travers « Ossuary », s’adonner à un rituel pour changer le monde tel que nous le connaissons, en le livrant aux flammes. Ils usent du sang, des croyances occultes et de l’obscurité pour ouvrir un chemin vers l’Armageddon. Ils ne reculent devant aucun concept. La radicalité des propos est d’une rage inouïe autour de la confrontation entre divinité chrétienne et satanisme.
On retiendra tout particulièrement les paroles incisives de « Gothenburg Is Burning », s’attaquant de manière implicite à la scène Death Metal Mélodique dont proviennent les groupes Dark Tranquility, In Flames ou encore At The Gates.
Let Them Hang paraît vouloir régler ses comptes avec l’univers en neuf actes, et un pan de la scène nationale semble mériter un acte à lui seul. Gothenburg serait même l’endroit idéal pour voir déferler l’enfer en premier lieu.

Let Them Hang est attaché à la puissance de manière unilatérale, qu’elle soit littérale ou musicale. Pourtant, bien qu’attaché aux racines de la scène Death Metal suédoise, ils ne tombent jamais dans le piège du revival old school. Le groupe vit avec son temps et apporte des touches bien placées venant tout droit de la scène Crust/ Post Hardcore, au niveau du chant rappelant parfois un certain Integrity.
Avec « Ossuary », Let Them Hang, se taille une place de choix dans un genre en pleine saturation qui avait du mal à conserver sa radicalité ainsi que son efficacité. Le groupe montre sa capacité à taper fort et juste. On ne peut que rester impatient face à l’idée d’un prochain album qui confirmera très certainement tout le bien que l’on pense d’eux, espérant qu’ils ne tomberont jamais dans un carcan monotone d’un point de vue créatif, avec la certitude que Let Them Hang se trouvera un jour dans les noms de référence de la scène underground suédoise.

« Ossuary »‘s cover, realized by Arjen Kunnen, with a dark sobriety, sounds the death knell based on the origins and concepts defining the group: A black background, for the intoxicating darkness of the album, hanging legs with the body and face not visible, recalling the repeated character of the execution with the regular and habitual character of the sound killing by the band, and finally these feet blessed, affirming all the grime and the violence which the formation knows how to show . The body was the light that gave light to the abyss, death has passed, there remains only suffering and desolation. Turn on your speakers, listen to the soft hum of the Boss HM2. From the first rotations of the vinyl, the flavor is given. Let Them Hang plays with fury, taking no detour. They are not there to discuss, philosophize or take prisoners but rather to assert their formidable position on the Swedish scene.
The opening track, « Empire Of Molten Bones, reminds us of the thrills we felt when we first heard Entombed’s » Hand Left Path « .
Nevertheless, it would be sad to discover this « Ossuary » through a latent nostalgia, as the band never ceases to demonstrate its own identity, mixing the Death Metal sounds with D-Beat rhythms scarying by their efficiency.
With the first notes of « Empire Of Molten Bones », the report is undeniable, a very particular alchemy operates between the members of the band. A devastating groove takes place on the nine tracks of the album whose this opening is a great welcome on the subject.
The thirty-five minutes run at full speed, never giving us time to breathe mixing wild rhythms and sticky mid-tempos. Our respite will come when the last chord will stop resonating, on a final Goat Star that looks like a portal to hell.
The Lyrics are only suffering and desolation. Let Them Hang seems, through « Ossuaire », devote themselves to a ritual to change the world as we know it, by cleaning it in flames. They use blood, occult beliefs and darkness to open a path to Armageddon. They don’t shy away from any concept. The radicality of the proposals is made with an incredible rage around the confrontation between Christian divinity and Satanism.
We will particularly remember the incisive lyrics of « Gothenburg Is Burning », implicitly attacking the Melodic Death Metal scene and bands like Dark Tranquility or In Flames.
Let Them Hang seems to want to settle its accounts with the universe in nine acts, and a section of the national scene seems to deserve an act in itself. Gothenburg would even be the perfect place to see hell in the first place.

Let Them Hang is unilaterally attached to power, whether literal or musical. Yet, although attached to the roots of the Swedish Death Metal scene, they never fall into the trap of the old school revival. The band lives with his era and brings well-placed touches straight from the Crust / Post Hardcore scene, at the level of the singing part sometimes recalling a certain Integrity.
With « Ossuary », Let Them Hang, carves out a place of choice in a genre in full saturation which had trouble retaining its radicality as well as its efficiency. The band shows its ability to hit hard and right. We can only stay impatient with the idea of an upcoming album which will certainly confirm all the good that we think of them, hoping that they will never fall into a monotonous shackles from a creative point of view , with the certainty that Let Them Hang will be one day in the reference names of the Swedish underground scene.
