The King’s Pistol est entré dans le terrier du Wombat et a répondu à quelques questions. Après une interview de plus d’une heure avec beaucoup d’amusement, autour d’une IPA fraîche et de leur discographie en accompagnement, voici tout ce que vous avez besoin de savoir pour mieux cerner la bête. The King’s Pistol entered the Wombat terrier and answered a few questions. After an interview of more than one hour with a lot of fun, around a fresh IPA and their accompanying discography, this is all you need to know to identify this crazy band. The interview was carried out by written messages with Andy.

Wombat Cult : Salut, peux-tu présenter The King’s Pistol avec un petit retour sur votre création?
Andy de The King’s Pistol : Je suis à la basse, Jim à la batterie et Pistol s’occupe du chant et joue de la guitare. Nous nous sommes formés il y a environ 5 ans à partir de ce qui était un projet solo que Julian (Pistol) avait pensé. Il avait un tas de chansons qu’il voulait enregistrer et m’a demandé si je voulais apporter mon jeu de basse sur les morceaux. À ce stade, nous avions un autre batteur. Il a décidé de partir après le pressage du premier album.
Wombat Cult : Depuis votre premier album «Long was the road, Dark was the night», le son a beaucoup évolué, comment est-ce arrivé ?
The King’s Pistol : Naturellement, une fois que Jim a rejoint le groupe, il a apporté son influence dans le processus de composition. Avec Pistol, ils ont écrit le deuxième album ensemble et les chansons ont pris une direction différente par rapport au premier album. Nous avons pu construire notre son. Rien n’a été imposé dans l’écriture des chansons. Chaque album représente un moment de la vie du groupe.
Wombat Cult : Oh, c’est une super ambiance de travail ! Quelle est la prochaine étape, y-aura t’il de nouvelles approches musicales, de nouvelles sonorités, dans votre prochain album ?
The King’s Pistol : Jim n’a jamais été batteur avant de nous rejoindre. J’ai fais partie de groupes avec lui depuis des années et je savais qu’il serait l’homme de la situtation. Lui et Pistol travaillent bien ensemble et font rebondir mille idées les unes sur les autres. Ils les écrivent puis nous entrons dans la salle de pratique et voyons comment ces dernières peuvent prendre forme. Nous pouvons passer des mois à travailler sur une seule chanson pour qu’elle ne soit finalement jamais utilisée.. Tandis que certaines chansons se composent très rapidement.. Le nouvel EP que nous sortons est un nouvel aspect dans notre son et notre style. C’est comme Vice mais avec plus de mordant. Le dernier épisode de ces trois EPs pourrait se terminer n’importe où, du punk rock jusqu’aux frontières du metal. Qui sait ce que l’avenir nous réserve !
Wombat Cult : Je veux vraiment découvrir ça ! Les fans de King’s Pistol m’ont demandé aujourd’hui quel sera le nom de votre prochain EP et quelle sera sa date de sortie ?
The King’s Pistol : Le nom du prochain EP a été annoncé via une session en ligne l’autre jour, donc ceux qui l’ont manqué, devront attendre maintenant ! Nous espérons qu’il sera disponible chez Majestic Mountain Records aux alentours de fin août/début septembre.
Wombat Cult : Tant de mystères ! Je suis content de content de connaitre le nom de ce second EP, j’étais au bon endroit au bon moment pour le savoir !
Actuellement, quelles sont vos principales influences dans votre processus de composition ?
The King’s Pistol : Elles changent tout le temps. Nous avons tous des goûts musicaux si différents qu’il est difficile de dire « oh écrivons une chanson comme tel groupe ou tel groupe ». Nous savons à quoi doit ressembler une chanson de King’s Pistol. Lorsque le morceau n’a pas le son The King’s Pistol, même si il est bon, nous ne l’utilisons pas. Pour Vice, nous écoutions beaucoup de Stones, The Stooges et The Doors. C’était le genre d’atmosphère vers lesquelles nous voulions aller, vers un son rock and roll classique.
Ces trois Eps seront tous liés en apparence et en son. Encore une fois, ils capturent une période dans la vie du groupe.
Wombat Cult : Le son est vraiment fabuleux sur vos albums! Où avez-vous enregistré? Dans quelles conditions?
The King’s Pistol : Nous étions très saouls! Nous sommes allés au studio Foals qui est au milieu de nulle part au Pays de Galles. Nous y avons vécu 4 jours. Nous y avons bu, joué, régardé des films et enregistré de la musique. Nous avons choisi Chris Fielding (de Conan) parce que nous voulions voir ce qu’un producteur de musique Doom pouvait faire avec nous. Et il a fait un travail incroyable. C’est si facile de travailler avec lui. Le studio est une évasion totale du réel. Tu peux simplement vivre et respirer la musique.
Evil Spirits a été enregistré dans un autre studio.
Wombat Cult : Ambiance parfaite pour un enregistrement efficace!
Les artworks de vos albums ont changé de façon parallèle à vos compositions, les pochettes d’Evil Spirits et Vice, bien que différentes, m’ont fasciné!
Peux-tu nous en dire un mot ?
The King’s Pistol : Le design d’Evil Spirits a été conçu par Branca. Nous voulions évoquer l’idée d’un ancien masque d’esprit maléfique. Nous avons cherché plusieurs ressources sur Internet et nous avons donné des idées à Branca. Nous voulions que les 3 crânes sur le dessus du masque nous représentent.
Vice a été réalisé par Shane Horror. Il fera toutes les illustrations pour les 3 EPs. L’idée de cette pochette était d’essayer de capturer l’esprit de l’EP, sombre, dangereux et sale. Nous aimons vraiment le processus de création visuelle de l’oeuvre. C’est aussi important que la musique à nos yeux. Nous voulons à chaque fois proposer un super objet !
Nous sommes exigeants avec les artistes.
Wombat Cult : J’ai l’impression que les paroles du groupe et les thèmes abordés dans vos chansons ont beaucoup évolué depuis quelques temps. Peux-tu nous parler des thèmes qui comptent à vos yeux ?
The King’s Pistol : Toutes les paroles sont écrites par Julian. Les thèmes varient selon chaque album. Les premiers morceaux étaient sombres et abordaient les vieilles chansons folkloriques anglaises. Evil Spirits s’est intéressé à de nombreux thèmes différents. Il y a toujours des morts et des pertes là-dedans.
Tandis que Vice capture la folie d’une nuit sauvage dans la ville. Je ne demande pas souvent de quoi parlent les paroles car j’aime imaginer mes propres histoires.
Wombat Cult : Je suis passionné par la chanson «White Witch Blues», quelle est l’histoire de cette chanson, y-a t’il des anecdotes à propos de celle-ci?
The King’s Pistol : Oui, effectivement, il y a quelques anecdotes. Je peux seulement vous dire ce que Pistol m’a présenté de l’histoire. C’es l’histoire de deux sœurs et comme vous pouvez l’entendre dans les paroles, elles ne sont pas les plus gentilles de leur coin. Quand cette chanson a été écrite, c’était un style vraiment différent de ce que nous avions fait auparavant. Cela a très bien fonctionné sur scène et c’est devenu un incontournable du groupe. Méfiez-vous de la sorcière blanche, elle n’est pas aussi pure qu’elle le fait savoir !
Wombat Cult : Génial, j’ai enfin quelque chose à me mettre sous la dent pour » White Witch Blues » !
Vous êtes maintenant chez Majestic Mountain Records! Comment s’est passée cette superbe rencontre?
The King’s Pistol : Majestic Mountain Records.. Devil’s Witches m’a invité à poser mes lignes de basse sur la première sortie du label « Coven Of The Ultra-riff« , un split entre Devil’s Witches et Saint Karloff, c’est ainsi que j’ai rencontré le label.
Nous venions tout juste de sortir Evil Spirits et nous ne cherchions pas particulièrement de label.
Lorsque nous avons eu l’idée de la sortie des 3 EPs, j’en ai parlé à Majestic, et ils nous ont tout de suite soutenus ! Nous avons signé dans la foulée. Majestic Mountain Records est vraiment un super label qui a su nous soutenir et continue à promouvoir notre musique.
Nous avons sorti de manière totalement indépendante nos trois premiers albums.
Wombat Cult : C’est vraiment incroyable que tu sois devenu bassiste de session pour Devil’s Witches ! Félicitations !
Sur les réseaux sociaux, The Kong’s Pistol est très présent dans la communauté vinyle, as tu des favoris pour ce premier semestre 2020?

Pour moi Devil’s Witches est un ami incroyable. J’étais un grand fan depuis le début et quand il m’a demandé si je voulais jouer, j’ai été époustouflé, et il m’a demandé à nouveau, ce que je trouve fabuleux. Ce sont des moments dont je suis très fier!
J’adore acheter des disques et j’aime la « scène underground », c’est assez nouveau pour moi, donc je trouve de nouveaux groupes tous les jours. Cette année a déjà vu des choses brillantes sortir. Ceux qui restent dans ma tête jusqu’à présent sont The Bloody Mallard pour sûr. Un si grand album. J’adore le nouvel album d’Elephant Tree aussi tout comme Goatriders, Sleepwulf, Pink Cigs, King Buffalo, Jointhugger. Je pourrai en donner tant d’autres. C’est tellement bon de découvrir de nouvelles musiques tout le temps. Ce n’est pas bon pour mon solde bancaire mais c’est bon pour l’âme.
Je suis assez présent sur la page instagram. Il s’agit de ma vie en tant que bassiste. Cela me permet de partager plus que seulement l’activité du groupe, ce qui est bien.

Wombat Cult : Hi, Can you introduce The King’s Pistol with a little come back around your creation ?
Andy from The King’s Pistol : Well. we are me at the bass, Jim on the drums and the Pistol sings and plays guitar. We formed about 5 years ago from what was a solo project that Julian (the pistol) had been doing. He had a bunch of songs that he wanted to record and asked if i would play bass on it. At this stage we had a different drummer. He decided to leave after the first album was pressed.
Wombat Cult : Since your first album « Long was the road dark was the night », the sound has evolved a lot, how did it happen ?
The King’s Pistol : Naturally, once jim joined it meant the band had his songwriting and guitar skills. So him and pistol wrote album two together and the songs took on a different sound to the first album. We were able to add more and build the sound. Nothing has been forced in the songwriting. Each album captures a time in the life of the band.
Wombat Cult: Oh it’s a cool and participative organisation !
What’s the next step, there will be new approaches in your next release ?
The King’s Pistol: Jim was never a drummer till he joined! I’d been in bands with him for years and I knew he would be the man for the job. Him and pistol work well together and bounce a thousand ideas off eachother. They write them then we get in the practice room and see how they work. We can spends months working on one song only for it to never be used.. Some songs come together very fast.. The new ep we have coming out is another progression in sound and style.. Its like Vice but with more bite.. The final ep in these 3 could end anywhere from punk rock to full on metal.. Who knows.
Wombat Cult: I really want to find out! King’s Pistol fans ask me today, what will be the name of your next EP, and when it will be release ?
The King’s Pistol: Well the name was announced via an live session the other day so if he missed it then he will have to wait now! The new ep will hopefully be out via majestic mountain records late August early September.
Wombat Cult: Oh yes! So many mysteries! I’m happy to know it, I was at the right place at the right time to know it!
Currently, what are your main influences in your creative process?
The King’s Pistol: They change all the time. We all have such different musical tastes that its hard to say oh let’s write a song like this band or that band. We know what a King’s Pistol song should sound like. We will write songs and say « its good but its not very Pistol » so we dont use it. For Vice at the studio we were listening to a lot of the Stones, The Stooges and The Doors (as always) and this was the kind of Vibe we wanted to go with. Classic rock and roll sound.
These 3 eps will all tie together in look and sound. Again it captures a period in the bands life.
Wombat Cult: The sound is really fabulous on your albums!
Where did you record? In what conditions?
The King’s Pistol: The conditions were we were very hungover! We went to Foals studio which is in the middle of nowhere in Wales. So we lived there for 4 days. Drinking, playing, watching movies and recording the music. We picked Chris Fielding (from Conan) as we wanted to see what a Doom music producer could do with us. And he did an amazing job. He’s so easy to work with. The studio is a total escape from reality. You can just live and breath the music.
Evil Spirits was recorded at another place.
Wombat Cult: Perfect atmosphere to record effectively!
The artworks of your albums have changed according to your compositions, the cover of Evil Spirits and Vice, although differents, fascinated me!
Can you say a word about it?
The King’s Pistol: Evil Spirits was designed by Branca. We wanted to conjure up the idea of an ancient evil spirit mask. We looked at loads on the Internet and gave ideas to Branca.. We wanted the 3 skulls on the top of the mask to represent us.. We like the number 3! Vice was done by Shane Horror.. He will do all artwork for these 3 eps.. The idea of that cover was to try and capture what the ep sounded like.. Bit dark bit dangerous and a bit dirty..we really enjoy the process of the artwork.. Its as important as the music for us.. We want to put out a great package every time!

Wombat Cult: I have the impression that the lyrics of the band and the themes approached in your songs have evolved a lot since a little time.
Can you tell us about the themes that are important for you ?
The King’s Pistol: All lyrics are written by Julian. Themes vary from each release. Early stuff was dark and like old English folk songs. Evil Spirits covered a lot of different themes again. There’s always death and loss in there. Vice captures the madness of a wild night out in the city. I don’t often ask what the lyrics are about as I like to imagine my own stories to them.
Wombat Cult: I am passionate about the song « White Witch Blues », what’s the history of this song, there’s some anecdotes about this one?
The King’s Pistol: Ha! Well yes there is. Ican only tell you what Pistol told me it was about. Its about 2 sisters and as you can hear in the lyrics they are not the nicest of people. When that song was written it was a really different style to what we’d done before. It worked really well live and became a firm favourite in our set. But beware the white witch.. She’s not as pure as she makes out!

You are now in the superb Majestic Mountain Records label!
How was this meeting?
The King’s Pistol: Majestic.. Ok well I was asked by Devil’s Witches to guest bass on the first majestic release the coven of the ultra riff so the label knew of us via that. We had not long put Evil Spirits out so we weren’t looking for a label. Then when we had the idea of the three ep release I asked majestic if they would be interested and they said yes. So we signed.. Brillant label and super supportive of us!
We self funded our first 3 albums.
Wombat Cult: It’s totally incredible that you play like session member in Devil’s Witches! Congrats mate!

The Devil’s Witches thing for me personally was amazing mate. I’d been huge fan for ages and when i got asked if I wanted to play I was blown away, and it have been asked again was ace. A very proud moment for me!
I love buying records and I love the whole « underground scene » its pretty new to me so i am finding new bands every day. This year has already seen some brillant stuff coming out. Ones that stick in my head so far are The Bloody Mallard for definite. Such a great album. I love the new Elephant Tree album.. Goatriders.. Sleepwulf.. Pink Cigs.. King Buffalo.. Jointhugger. So many I could choose. It’s just so good discovering new music all the time. It’s not good for my bank balance but its great for the soul.
I run the instagram page. So it’s my life as the bass player in the band. It allows me to share more than just band stuff which has been good.
