Pour cette seconde interview, Wombat Cult a creusé une galerie jusqu’au Chili, pour une interview avec le maître du Doom Sud Américain : Francisco Gonzalez, bassiste de Arteaga. Entre musique qui crache, rituels, expérience transcendantale, cinéma et érotisme, voici le récit de notre rencontre.
For this second interview, Wombat Cult has dug a gallery to Chile, for an interview with the Doom Master of South America : Francisco Gonzalez, bassist of Arteaga. Between rawing music, rituals, transcendental experiences, cinema and eroticism, here is the story of our meeting.

Arteaga : Salut ! Ici il fait 0 degrés et j’en suis à mon deuxième café !
Wombat Cult : Bon courage, j’espère que le café arriver te permet de survivre.
Peux-tu revenir sur la création d’Arteaga ?
Arteaga : Nous sommes un groupe venant tout droit de Santiago du Chili, un pays d’Amérique du Sud. Nous avons commencé à créer Arteaga fin 2010, avec Sebastian M (guitariste).
Au début on faisait des jams, mixant différents sons, on était plus attaché au punk et au stoner.
Wombat Cult : Nous fêterons donc votre dixième anniversaire à la fin de l’année, incroyable !
Vous sortez votre nouvel album Season Of The Witch Vol 4, en trois segments, sous forme d’EPs.
Dans le premier chapitre, nous ressentons de nombreuses nouvelles ambiances, plus de psychédélisme, plus de vibrations Woodstock et des voyages plein de LSD! Peux-tu nous en parler ?
Arteaga : Ouais ! Après Necromancy, nous avons commencé à donner une nouvelle tournure au son du groupe, les expériences avec les drogues lysergiques nous reviennent toujours à l’esprit, sous la forme de rêves heureux ou de cauchemars, et nous avons décidé qu’il était temps d’intégrer cela à notre musique. Ce nouveau son est venu et il nous a été très facile de le traduire en musique. Les mauvais trips laissent beaucoup de créativité. La peur nous fait voir, ressentir et entendre des choses que la réalité quotidienne ne permet pas ou bloque.
Nous voulions également générer plus d’ambiances, c’est pourquoi nous incluons des claviers et des samplers, pour créer une expérience plus robuste.
Un cauchemar érotique en technicolor !
Wombat Cult : J’aime vraiment cette nouvelle approche!
Votre son mêle un Doom influencé par Electric Wizard et des nappes lumineuses rappelant «Soul Sacrifice» de Santana dans ce chapitre 1 !
Quelles sont les influences du groupe durant le processus créatif ?
Arteaga : Les piliers fondamentaux sont appelés par le groupe triangle d’or avec The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin. Le triangle d’or a tout créé, nous recyclons simplement en offrant notre manière de jouer.
Nous sommes de vieux grigous, nous avons écouté beaucoup de musique dans nos vies, les influences sont nombreuses. Je suis actuellement coincé avec Goat, Neil Young, j’ai écouté Sodom aussi l’autre fois.
Un autre groupe qui compte pour nous est Dead Kennedys, leur son est unique, garage, punk, surf… de la schizophrénie pure.
Le chapitre 2 de Season Of The Witch aura de nouveaux sons et de nouvelles vitesses de jeu, sans négliger le psychédélisme, les cauchemars et la sensualité.
Wombat Cult : Belles références ! J’ai écouté tant de fois «Plastic Surgery Disasters» de Dead Kennedys, un pur chef-d’œuvre!
J’adore le son brut de vos disques! Où enregistrez-vous? Dans quelles conditions ?!
Arteaga: Après notre tournée au Mexique, les choses se sont compliquées, Domingo (batteur) a quitté le groupe. Cette situation a changé beaucoup de choses. Nous avons dû repenser l’avenir du groupe, dont la façon d’entretenir notre salle de répétition.
C’est un petit espace à l’étage – 5 d’une galerie commerciale, une cave que nous préparons comme salle de répétition. C’est là que nous enregistrons de manière précaire les démos que nous enregistrerons plus tard en studio. Nous avons décidé d’enregistrer dans notre salle de répétition avec nos ressources.
Nous avons déjà fait le test et ça s’est plutôt bien passé.
Nous avons enregistré le premier morceau du chapitre 2. Serpiente sera présenté le 15 juin. Nous avons beaucoup aimé le résultat de notre enregistrement, c’est un son sincère, c’est comme ça qu’on sonne en live. Nous enregistrer dans une salle de répétition change radicalement le son, c’est un son réel et brut qui reflète la nouvelle réalité que nous vivons.
Wombat Cult : Méthode DIY, félicitations !
Tu as indiqué juste avant que le chapitre 2 aura de nouveaux sons, peux-tu nous en dire plus?
Arteaga : En ce qui concerne les nouvelles compositions, elles auront beaucoup de groove, de rythmes garage, d’ambiances sinistres et de son rétro.
Wombat Cult : Vos visuels changent, les deux premiers albums rappellent des films d’exorcisme et des cultes de divinités sud-américaines, l’idée du film La Montagne Sacrée m’obsède pendant toute l’écoute!
Avec NECROMANCY, vous avez ouvert la porte au rétro-érotisme, peux-tu nous donner plus de précisions sur votre méthode de création d’artworks ?!
Arteaga : L’érotisme, en particulier celui des années 60-70, a toujours été présent dans notre musique. Je suis un amoureux du cinéma Giallo, le maniement du suspense, du gore et de la sensualité est unique.
En général, pour les artworks, je conçois des collages d’images de films qui m’ont influencé.
L’occulte a également toujours été présent dans notre musique, notre son, nos paroles et nos riffs.
En ce qui concerne les couvertures, nous avons travaillé avec de très bons artistes tels que Wizard of Meth (Necromancy) et Francisco Visceral (Vol4). Pour les autres travaux visuels, je m’en suis occupé. L’occultisme et l’érotisme rétro sont fortement liés à notre musique de manière formelle.
J’adore travailler sur les collages.
Wombat Cult : J’aime le travail de ces deux artistes, et ton travail sur la sortie LP de Dios Sol est génial !
Comme on parle de gialli, on ressent une influence particulière du cinéma d’exploitation sur la scène sud-américaine avec des groupes comme Fulanno, Mephistofeles et Arteaga par exemple ! As-tu des films à nous recommander, pour continuer notre voyage dans l’univers d’Arteaga avec une soirée cinéma parfaite ?!
Arteaga : Oh super, soirée cinéma! J’adore cette question !
Je commencerai par Amityville 2: The Possesion. Avec ce film j’ai perdu ma virginité dans avec le cinéma d’horreur, je l’ai vu à 7 ans et j’ai presque chié de peur.
Ce film m’a initié au genre, c’est là que ma dépendance vient dans la recherche des films les plus tordus qui existaient dans le club vidéo de mon quartier.
Deuxième film: La colline a des Yeux. Putain de grand film! Il a tout !
Pour laisser libre cours à l’érotisme: Ilsa She Wolf Of SS!
J’adore aussi Jess Franco et Salò de Pasolini !
Wombat Cult : Salò a hanté, hante et hantera toute ma vie ! Je suis accro à Pasolini !
Il y a quelque chose que tu veux dire en particulier sur vos paroles? Une thématique récurrente?
Arteaga : Ce sont des histoires qui me sont arrivées ou que j’ai entendu.
Par exemple Daga (Vol2) est une histoire d’amour, l’amour est court comme un rasoir, il nécessite de la douleur et des sacrifices pour le garder en vie. Il s’agit d’une fille qui coupe le corps de son partenaire pour consolider leur amour.
Marcela (Necromance) parle de la toxicomanie, quand elle vous attrape et ne vous laisse pas partir, comme un mauvais amour.
Brujo (Vol4), traite de la luxure, comme elle nous appelle et nous attire, la recherche du profane, du sexe et du sexe libre.
Toutes nos histoires sont racontées par des femmes.
Wombat Cult : Daga ressemble à un sombre acte de psychomagie ! Jodorowsky serait tellement fier!
Je pense que je vais passer de nombreuses heures à traduire vos paroles! Ces trois histoires m’obsèdent déjà !
Avec Vestsjysk Orken, vous êtes l’un des premiers groupes à rejoindre Interstellar Smoke Records! Comment s’est passée cette rencontre avec le label?
Arteaga : Il y a plus d’un an, une personne très sérieuse nous a écrit via Instagram.
Son nom était Jacek T, un Polonais qui lançant son label indépendant et voulait qu’Arteaga soit sa première sortie.
C’était très surprenant pour nous qu’Arteaga puisse être connue si loin de nos terres, et résonner jusqu’en Pologne.
Il nous a proposé un contrat pour presser Necromancy et nous avons accepté. Le label a grandi et compte aujourd’hui des groupes incroyables. C’est vraiment un honneur d’être le premier groupe d’ISR.
Le label est comme une grande famille, Jacek est un mec génial. La famille ISR continue et continuera de s’agrandir.
Wombat Cult : Nous avons besoin de Jacek pour continuer à faire vibrer la scène internationale underground Doom !
Vous avez fondé « Ritual Electrico », un festival qui réunit le meilleur de la scène sud-américaine ! C’est fantastique, as-tu des groupes sud-américains à recommander ?!
Arteaga : Ritual Electrico est un petit festival créé par Arteaga et Dejalosangrar. Ne quelques années le festival a grandi et nous espérons pouvoir étendre le spectre des groupes à d’autres continents, ce serait bien d’avoir Hadewijch.
La scène sud-américaine a des sons assez cool et audacieux.
Au Chili, il y a d’excellents groupes qui sonnent fort et avec une très bonne proposition: Let Them Bleed, The Great Fear, Canera, Black Messiah, Heraldica de mandrake, Dejalosangrar, El Gran Temo, Condenados.
Wombat Cult : Wow ! Nous avons pas mal de nouveaux groupes à écouter maintenant !

Can you introduce Arteaga with a little come back around your creation?
Arteaga : Of course, We are a band formed in Santiago de Chile, a country in the south of America, we started to give it shape at the end of 2010, together with Sebastian M (guitarist).
At the beginning we practiced as a jam, mixing differents sounds, we were more attached to punk and stoner.
Wombat Cult: Ok! We will celebrate your tenth anniversary at the end of the year, totally insane!
Actually, you are releasing Season Of The Witch Vol 4, in three chapters.
In the first chapter we feel many new atmospheres, more psychedelism, more Woodstock vibes, and LSD holes! Can you give us a word about it?
Arteaga: Yeah!
After Necromancy, we started to give a twist to the sound of the band, experiences with lysergic drugs always come back to our minds, in the form of happy dreams or nightmares, and we decided it was time to land this in our music.
This new sound came and it was very easy for us to translate it into music.
Bad trips give a lot of creativity.
Fear makes us see, feel and hear things that everyday reality does not allow, or blocks. We also wanted to generate more atmospheres, that’s why we include keyboards and samplers, to create a more robust experience.
An erotic nightmare in technicolor!
Wombat Cult: I really like this new way!
Your sound is melting Doom influenced by Electric Wizard and some kind of Santana’s « Soul Sacrifice » vibes in this chapter 1! What are the influences of the band in your creative process?
Arteaga: The fundamental pillars of the band are called the golden triangle, Beatles, Sabbath, Zeppelin. Golden triangle created everything, we just recycle giving it with our vision.
We are old cats, we have listened to a lot of music in our lives, the influences are many. I’m currently stuck with Goat, Neil Young. I’ve listened to Sodom last day too.
Another band that is playing among us is Dead Kennedys, its sound is unique, garage, punk, surf, pure schizophrenia.
Season Of The Witch chapter 2 will have new sounds and speeds, without neglecting psychedelia, nightmares and sensuality.
Wombat Cult: So many good bands! I listened so many times « Plastic Surgery Disasters » by DK, pure masterpiece!
I love the raw sound on your records! Where are you recording? In what conditions?!
Arteaga: After our tour to MX, things got complicated for the band, Domingo (drummer) left the band. This situation changed many things. We had to evaluate many things with the future of the band, one of them was how to maintain our rehearsal room.
It’s a small space on the floor – 5 of a commercial gallery, it is a cellar that we prepare as a rehearsal room. That’s where we precariously record the demos that we will later record in the studio. We have decided to record in our rehearsal room with our resources.
We already did the test and it turned out quite well.
We already recorded the first track of chapter 2. Serpiente will premiere on June 15.
We liked a lot the result of our recording , it is a sincere sound, it’s how we sound live. Recording ourselves in a rehearsal room changes the sound dramatically, it is a real and raw sound that reflects the new reality we are living.
Wombat Cult: Real DIY method to record, congrats!
You said just before, the chapter 2 will have new sounds, can you tell us more about that?
Arteaga: Regarding the music, it will have a lot of groove, garage rhythms, sinister atmospheres and retro sound.
Wombat Cult: Your visuals are changing, the two first albums recalled some exorcism movies and South American divinities, can’t stop thinking about the movie Holy Mountain during all the listening! With NECROMANCY, you opened the door to retro-eroticism, can you give us more precisions about your method to create artworks?!
Arteaga: Eroticism has always been present in our music, especially 60-70. I am a lover of Giallo cinema, the handling of suspense, gore and sensuality is unique.
In general, for the cover arts I design based on collage of images from movies that have influenced me.
The occult has also always been present in our music, sound, lyrics and riffs. Regarding the covers we have worked with very good artists such as Wizard of Meth (necromance) and Francisco Visceral (Vol4). For the other covers and arts of the band I have worked myself. Occultism and Retro eroticism is strongly tied to our music, fit. I love working collages.
Wombat Cult: I like the work of these two artists, and your work on the LP release of Dios Sol is awesome!
Like we are speaking about gialli, we feel a particular influence of the exploitation movies in the South American scene with bands like Fulanno, Mephistofeles and you for example! Have you some movies to recommand us, to continue our Arteaga trip with a perfect movie night?!
Arteaga: uhhhh movie night! Love that issue!
I’ll start with Amityville 2 : The Possesion. With this movie I lost my virginity in the genre of horror, I saw it at 7 years old and I almost shit with fright. This movie introduced me to the genre, that’s where my addiction comes from looking for the most twisted movies that existed in the video club in my neighborhood.
Second movie : The Hill Have Eyes. Fucking great movie! He has everything on it!
To give eroticism free rein : Ilsa She Wolf Of SS! Love Jess Franco and Salo too!
Wombat Cult: Salo haunted, haunt and will haunt my entire life! I’m a Pasolini addict!
There’s something that you want to say particularly in your lyrics ? A recurrent thematic?
Arteaga: They are stories that have happened to me or I have heard.
For example Daga (Vol2) is a love story, love is short as a sharp razor, it requires pain and sacrifices to keep it alive, it is about a girl who cuts her partner’s body to consolidate their love.
Marcela (Necromance) is about drug addiction, when she grabs you and doesn’t let you go, like a bad love.
Brujo (Vol4), deals with lust, as it calls us and attracts us, the search for the profane, sex and free sex.

With Vestsjysk Orken, you’re one of the very first band to join Interstellar Smoke Records! How it was this meeting with the label?
Arteaga: More than a year ago a very serious character wrote us through IG
His name was Jacek T, a Pole who started an independent label and wanted Arteaga to be his first release. It was very striking to us that Arteaga sounded so far away (Poland). He offered us a good deal to edit Necromance and we accepted it. The label has grown and has incredible bands. It’s really an honor to be the first band released. The label is like a big family, Jacek is an excellent guy. ISR family will continue to grow.
Wombat Cult: Yes, There’s so many good things on ISR, and we need Jacek to continue to celebrate the underground international Doom scene!
You founded « Ritual Electrico », a festival that brings the best of the South American Scene! It’s fantastic, have you some south american bands to recommand to the world?!
Arteaga: Ritual Electrico is a small self-managed festival, created by Arteaga and Dejalosangrar (excellent band).Years after years the festival has grown and we hope to be able to expand the spectrum of bands to other continents it would be good to have Hadewijch.
The South American scene has pretty cool and daring sounds.
In Chile there are excellent bands that sound hard and with a very good proposal: Let them bleed, The Great Fear, Canera, Black Messiah, Heraldica de mandrake, Dejalosangrar, El Gran Temo, Condenados.
