Nous sommes le 14 janvier, l’année 2022 est pour tous du passé, une histoire ancienne, la plupart des « TOP » ont déjà été publiés et pourtant du côté de Wombat Cult j’ai décidé d’attendre, de ne pas me faire dépasser comme l’an dernier et oublier des sorties importantes, découvertes quelques jours après le nouvel an dont Vide, Crymych, Nansarunai, The King’s Pistol ou encore Demonio.
En une cinquantaine de noms, de propositions, faisant fi qu’il s’agisse d’albums, d’EPs, de demos ou tout simplement de projets, voici une déambulation à travers une année chargée, et ce, dans tous les horizons musicaux.
Une année où de nombreuses attentes n’ont pas su concrétiser nos rêves et où, finalement, de l’inconnu a surgi des noms obsédants, troublants et singuliers dans leurs genres respectifs.

Un premier album très Sabbath, rempli de tonnes de tubes, qui avait su me porter tout le long du confinement il y a de cela maintenant plusieurs mois, années. Un très sympathique rendez-vous, dont je ne savais pas trop si la suite pourrait vraiment apporter quelque chose de suffisant pour devenir un groupe d’intérêt.
Et bien Sleepwulf semblait en avoir bien plus sous le capot que je ne pouvais l’imaginer car en quelques mois, le groupe s’est forgé un son rutilant, profond, admirable, et surtout a composé un album qui, sorti dans les années 70, aurait été un grand classique. Alors, certes le grand public n’est plus ouvert à cet horizon musical, mais pour ma part, ce Sunbeams Curl est clairement devenu un album de chevet, un vinyle qui depuis sa sortie revient chaque semaine sur la platine, et où je ne peux m’empêcher de chanter à tue-tête. EXTRAORDINAIRE.
A very Sabbath first album, filled with tons of hits, which had carried me all the way through confinement several months, years ago. A very nice meeting, of which I was not sure if the sequel could really bring something sufficient to become an interest group.
Well Sleepwulf seemed to have a lot more under the hood than I could imagine because in a few months, the group forged a gleaming, deep, admirable sound, and above all composed an album which, released in the 70s , would have been a great classic. So, certainly the general public is no longer open to this musical horizon, but for my part, this Sunbeams Curl has clearly become a bedside album, a vinyl which since its release has been coming back to the turntable every week, and where I cannot stop me from singing at the top of my voice. Et pourtant, ce premier album m’ a poursuivi ces derniers mois. Écouté de façon régulière par ma compagne, le disque a finalement pénétré mon être, j’ai appris à me faire maltraiter par cette voix non-chalante, par ces mouvements doucereux, jusqu’à l’hypnose, jusqu’à tout oublier pour finalement n’entendre qu’une fréquence.

Je ne sais véritablement plus comment cet album est arrivé sur mon chemin, une recommandation de Sakrifiss, ou bien directement par des déambulations sur Bandcamp, mais en tout cas cet album de Vertige a pris le temps de germer en moi.
Les premières écoutes étaient plaisantes, mais surtout des mots, des airs, des atmosphères se sont mises à me suivre, à me hanter, à me travailler de manière régulières. Au cours de ces songes, il m’était impossible de repousser l’écoute de l’album, un album qui aujourd’hui est devenu un véritable compagnon de vie, une pièce qui me touche droit au coeur, et qui explore certaines de mes blessures, certaines de mes cassures.
Vertige parle à tous les solitaires, ceux qui se déléctent de l’abîme, qui savent observer dans les interstices, blessures invisibles et pourtant terrifiantes de douleurs.
Une offrande céleste, extra-sensorielle, tout simplement.

4. « Northland III » by Tassi

Nous suivions l’an dernier l’accroche titanesque du projet Tassi avec « Northland I&II », un espace de liberté entre Black Metal et Shoegaze, sans pour autant entrer dans le carcan Blackgaze. Un voyage qui nous avait ensorcelé, qui, d’une longueur conséquente, et aux pistes plutôt longues, se savourait à la manière d’une œuvre méditative, un parchemin à parcourir, sans vraiment retenir de morceaux et donnant un mouvement majestueux à la beauté déconcertante.
Avec l’arrivée de « Northland III », je restais assez méfiant, redoutant une répétition, ne percevant pas franchement comment le projet aurait pu évoluer sans tomber dans des variations homogènes de ses deux premiers chapitres.
Une mauvaise pensée car ce « Northland III » est tout sauf une redite. Il s’agit de l’envol de cette trilogie (?), chaque morceau a sa propre existence, propose une expérience transcendantale unique, que la production parfois limitée n’handicape à aucun moment, bien au contraire, dévoilant un lointain spectre punk étourdissant.
Les airs nous trottent en tête et très rapidement cette nouvelle proposition de Tassi devient une obsession dont il est très difficile de se passer.
Last year we followed the titanic hook of the Tassi project with « Northland I&II », a space of freedom between Black Metal and Shoegaze, without entering the Blackgaze straitjacket. The tunes run through our minds and very quickly this new proposal from Tassi becomes an obsession that is very difficult to do without.

Cependant, tenez-vous, car bien que discret Electric Octopus fait son retour et mise absolument tout sur l’expérimentation et l’improvisation, portant à nos pavillons un rêve inespéré, celui d’aller chercher des structures, des textures et spectres sonores singuliers, ivres.
Je suis complètement hypnotisé par ce « St Patrick’s Cough » qui depuis sa première écoute me hante, me berce, tout comme me transperce. Ce n’est plus Stoner, ce n’est plus Rock, cela nage dans un bain psychédélique fascinant, venez découvrir de nouvelles voies, sortez de l’impasse.

Peu d’informations sur ce nouveau One-Man band tout droit venu du Midwest, où seul le visuel et le titre des morceaux nous ouvrent les portes de cette nouvelle vision d’une scène qui ne cesse de surprendre de par son inventivité tant sonique que thématique.
Ink & Fire semble s’éloigner des thématiques conventionnelles et convoque une musique inspirée par les confins de l’esprit, par le pouvoir de l’encre et des récits qu’elle inscrit une fois en contact avec le papier.
La composition est d’une force extraordinaire, désolidarisant la terre, rythmique continue et endiablée, du ciel, mélodies tranchantes et projections hypnotiques. D’un bout à l’autre « Execution Of Spirit » est une expérience transcendantale, un album qu’il est difficile d’arrêter, qui nous hante de par sa dichotomie infernale dans l’orchestration de ses sonorités. Le grand écart entre ombre et lumière est ahurissant créant un espace d’expression redoutable, collant à merveille à l’interprétation que nous nous en faisons, rappelant la fougue effrayante et jouissive d’un Maquahuitl, la grandeur de Wolves In The Throne Room, et mêlant le tout avec un tourbillon punk qui nous écorche à vif.
