A Wombat Cult Selection / 50 soundscapes to bury 2021

Après une année moins chargée en articles, mettant en avant les interviews plutôt que les reviews, contrairement à l’an passé, j’ai décidé avec Wombat Cult de vous proposer un article revenant plus en détail sur tous les albums qui m’ont marqué cette année et plus spécifiquement des albums dont j’aurai tant aimé vous parler.
Cette année fut chargée en albums, et désertée en concerts, espérant retrouver en 2022 les salles qui ont connu nos cris, nos larmes, nos fureurs, nos névroses mais aussi, et surtout, nos joies et nos rires, où la bière bon marché tapissait le sol, et les locaux sentaient encore les fluides en tout genre. La vie a quitté la scène, mais la musique n’a pas quitté nos vies.

L’industrie des vinyles est au point mort, écrasé par les maux de notre temps, des monstres que nous avons élevé.
Les rééditions déferlent ne sachant plus que faire, les « stars » mondiales inondent le marché de disques que nous retrouverons encore dans un demi-siècle dans les brocantes les plus douteuses mais… les petits labels ont su résister, et leur travail n’a fait que devenir chaque jour un peu plus fin, précis et plus que tout raffiné.

Cela faisait bien des années que l’underground n’avait pas dû revêtir de tels habits de résistances tant pratiques qu’idéologiques.

De nouveaux noms ont surpris -vous les découvrirez dans quelques lignes- et certaines valeurs sures ont perdu la flamme d’Iron Maiden à Amenra en passant par Eyehategod, Monolord ou The Wolves In The Throne Room..
Mais il y a eu tant de belles surprises, de petites formations cachées sous le sable des pierres que concassent les géants.
Les déceptions nourrissent l’avenir, et en attendant cet hypothétique futur, réjouissons-nous des lueurs qui nous ont porté du fond de nos maisons jusqu’à l’autre bout du monde.

After a less busy year in terms of articles, focusing on interviews rather than reviews, unlike last year, I decided with Wombat Cult to offer you an article going over in more detail all the albums that marked me this year and more specifically the albums that I would have loved to tell you about.
This year was loaded with albums, and deserted in concerts, hoping to find again in 2022 the rooms which knew our cries, our tears, our fury, our neuroses but also, and especially, our joys and our laughter, where the cheap beer lined the ground, and the locals still smelled of fluids of all kinds.
Life has left the stage, but music has not left our lives.

The vinyl industry is locked, crushed by the evils of our time, the monsters that we have raised.
The massive reissues are pouring in, not knowing what to do, the world « stars » flood the record market that we will still find in half a century in the most dubious second-hand shops but … the small labels have been able to resist, and their work has been done, to become each day a little more perfect, precise and more than anything refined.

New names have surprised – you will discover them in a few lines – and some sure values ​​have lost the flame from Iron Maiden to Amenra via Eyehategod, Monolord or The Wolves In The Throne Room.
But there were so many beautiful surprises, small formations hidden under the sand of stones crushed by giants.
Disappointments feed the future, and while waiting for that hypothetical future, let us rejoice in the glimmers that have carried us from the depths of our homes to the other side of the world.

Spider God mène l’assaut d’une manière à la fois mélodique, obsédante et épileptique rendant un hommage stroboscopique à ce deuxième volet de la trilogie de la foi d’Ingmar Bergman.
Il y a dans le travail de Spider God une sensibilité étrange et suffocante qui hypnotise totalement. Les mélodies nous transportent dans cette nuit sans fin, où la lumière est si rare mais pure, à l’image de ces riffs tranchants mais obsessionnels.
Ce second EP complètement fou, nous surprend, et nous bat avec dévotion.

Pour découvrir Spider God :

Spider Dog takes the assault with an obsessive melodic way and make a tribute to the faith trilogy of Ingmar Bergman. There’s a strange and suffocating sensibility in this work that totally hypnotize.
The melodies take us to this endless night, where the light is so rare but pure, like these sharp but obsessive riffs.
This first EP is completely crazy, surprizing us, beating us with belief.

To discover Spider God:

29. Crypt Witch – « Ritual Herbs »
Instrumental Doom Metal

Deux ans après le très mystérieux Bad Trip Exorcism, Crypt Witch ressort de son caveau dans le même silence et anonymat que pour sa première expédition. Ritual Herbs reste fidèle au premier effort du groupe à savoir un voyage Instrumental Occult Doom hypnotique. Ce second album n’est pas celui de la prise de risque. Néanmoins, la maîtrise en matière d’écriture est sidérante. Dans toute sa simplicité, Crypt Witch nous embarque vers de sombres horizons où les accords respirent, s’élancent dans l’obscurité pour mieux revenir nous hanter.

Nous approchons d’une vision du Doom, transcendantale, où le classicisme laisse place à l’envoûtement, entre fumées hallucinogènes et frayeurs psychédéliques. Une fois le premier morceau achevé, l’album file d’une traite et ne cesse de venir nous torturer pour une nouvelle expédition dans ces contrées damnées. Fascinant.

Two years after the very mysterious Bad Trip Exorcism, Crypt Witch comes out of his vault in the same silence and anonymity as on his first expedition. Ritual Herbs stays true to the band’s first effort namely a hypnotic Occult Doom Instrumental Journey. This second album is not about taking risks. Nonetheless, the mastery of writing is astounding.
In all its simplicity, Crypt Witch takes us to dark horizons where chords breathe, soar into obscurity the better to come back to haunt us. We are approaching a vision of the Doom, transcendental, where classicism gives way to bewitchment, between hallucinogenic fumes and psychedelic fears. Once the first track is finished, the album goes straight in and keeps coming to torture us on a new expedition to these damned lands. Fascinating.

Vous avez toujours rêvé de trouver une fange musicale entre le Deathcrush de Mayhem et l’ensorcelant Raw Doom de Witchcult Today d’Electric Wizard ?

Soyez heureux car Lord Mortvm vient de naître et risque de laisser plus d’une formation sur le carreau. Tout en gardant une composition crue et relativement froide, Lord Mortvm, projet solo norvégien, réussit à dépasser la rigueur de son paysage musical national et nous piège dans un succulent labyrinthe psychédélique où les accords, et rythmiques appellent à l’invocation, soulevant la chaleur des enfers, nous cadenaçant dans cette condensation infernale, où notre dernier s’évapore avec plaisir, où l’agonie devient ailleurs rêvés.

27. Big Brave & The Body – « Leaving None But Small Birds »

2021 aura été une année chargée pour Big Brave ainsi que pour The Body. D’une part, Big Brave a sorti un nouvel album, plutôt réussi mais loin de toutes surprises, conservant leur écrin sans jamais prendre de trop grands risques. D’autre part, The Body a sorti un album tortueux et torturé, fascinant, lo-fi, raw et noise qui se taillerait une place de choix dans la playlist matinale de Guantanamo.

En découvrant l’annonce d’un tel partenariat, on commençait à imaginer les contours sonores de cette collaboration, et le don d’ubiquité ne fut pas notre plus grand ami tant la rencontre des deux entités a su faire naître un univers singulier et vibrant.

Les horizons expérimentaux vont se perdre et résonner dans des paysages Folk Ritualist, où l’incantation somme toute ordinaire s’enfonce, accord après accord dans une glaise vertigineuse où les forces en présence ont su faire preuve de délicatesse, et de sagesse pour dessiner un monde nouveau, où nous venons déposer nos rêves, tout comme nos cauchemars pour bâtir les fondations de nos frayeurs à venir. Un choc.

Pour découvrir Big Brave & The Body :

2021 has been a busy year for Big Brave as well as The Body. On the one hand, Big Brave released a new album, quite successful but far from all surprises, keeping their setting without ever taking too great risks. On the other hand, The Body released a twisted and tortured, fascinating, lo-fi, raw and noise album that would carve a place for itself on the Guantanamo morning playlist.

By discovering the announcement of such a partnership, we began to imagine the sound contours of this collaboration, and the gift of ubiquity was not our greatest friend as the meeting of the two entities has given birth to a singular and vibrant universe.

The experimental horizons will resonate in Folk Ritualist soundscapes, where the generally ordinary incantation sinks, chord after chord in a vertiginous clay where the forces in presence have been able to show delicacy, and wisdom to draw a new world, where we come to deposit our dreams, just like our nightmares to build the foundations of our fears and joys to come. A shock.

26. MEDRAUT – « MEDRAUT ONE »
Cavernous Raw And Ambient Black Metal

Les grands noms de l’underground UKBM, à savoir Revenant Marquis, Lungtoucher et Maiden Hair ont conçu, dans les ténèbres MEDRAUT. Une formation hors du commun qui mêle Raw Black Metal, Sonorités nauséeuses, Dungeon Synth et riffs acides.
Bien qu’hermétique dans son ouverture, nous nous retrouvons très vite happé par la névrose que vient nous délivrer cette rencontre au sommet.
Une surprise de fin d’année qui risque de nous porter durant quelques mois en 2022.

Pour découvrir MEDRAUT :

The great names of the Underground UKBM, namely Revenant Marquis, Lungtoucher and Maiden Hair designed, in the darkness MEDRAUT.
An out of the ordinary formation which mixes Raw Black Metal, nauseating sounds, Dungeon Synth and acid riffs. Although hermetic in its openness, we very quickly find ourselves caught up in the neurosis that comes to us from this meeting at the top.
An end-of-year surprise that may carry us for a few months in 2022.

To discover MEDRAUT:

25. Fulci – « Exhumed Information »
Death Metal
Time To Kill Records

Après avoir exploré les plages ensanglantées du Zombie de Lucio Fulci, le groupe vient nous insuffler une nouvelle dose de leur Retro Brutal Death Metal en visitant cette fois-ci les images de Voices From Beyond réalisé par le maître du gore à l’italienne.

Le son se veut moins lourd et crasse que sur Tropical Sun. Il gagne en amplitude, en modernité, tout en ayant réussi à garder son identité sonore. Il est étonnant de voir à quel point ce film, pour le moins médiocre dans la carrière du cinéaste transalpin, est ici célébré.
La machine Fulci s’emballe et délivre une véritable déferlante de fréquences grasses, poisseuses, parvenant à dépasser leur monotonie, de par la présence de TV-Crimes contrebalançant le caractère monolithique du propos avec des arrangements synth discrets mettant en relief le mausolée bâti par le groupe, transcendant littéralement l’expérience.

La violence est inouïe, ça bave, ça saigne, l’expérience est physique, et pourtant lorsque les segments synth explosent, nous jouissons d’une véritable expérience intime, portant les saturations au creux de nos organes pour mieux nous cisailler de l’intérieur. Fabileux.

Pour découvrir :

After exploring the bloody beaches of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie, the band comes back with their Retro Brutal Death Metal. This time, horror around will visit the movie Voices From Beyond directed by the master of Italian gore.

The albumis largely less heavy and filthy than Tropical Sun. It gains in amplitude, in modernity, while having succeeded in keeping its sound identity. It is astonishing to see how much this film, to say the least mediocre in the career of the transalpine filmmaker, is celebrated here.
The Fulci machine gets carried away and delivers a veritable surge of fatty, sticky frequencies, managing to overcome their monotony, through the presence of TV-Crimes counterbalancing the monolithic character of the subject with discreet synth arrangements highlighting the mausoleum built by the band, literally transcending the experience.

The violence is incredible, it drools, it bleeds, the sonic expedition is physical, and yet when the synth segments explode, we enjoy a real intimate trip, carrying the saturations in the hollow of our organs, the better way to shear from the inside. Fabulous.

To Discover Fulci:

24. Future Of Despair – « Hell City »
D-Beat / Raw Punk
1753

Que de frissons à la simple pensée de ce premier essai de la part de Future Of Despair. Tout est en place, l’avenir ouvre grand les bras à cette formation Raw Punk/ D-Beat qui tétanise dès le premier accord, dès la première giclée vocale.

La hargne est tout simplement effrayante, glaçante. La formation US, prouve qu’en matière de terreur sonore ils ont tout pour devenir rois. Hell City en une poignée de minutes irrite, frappe, racle, et prend plaisir à nous voir agoniser et jouir dans ce torrent d’ultraviolence.

Pour découvrir Future Of Despair :

What shivers at the mere thought of this first essay from Future Of Despair. Everything is in place, the future opens its arms largely to this Raw Punk / D-Beat formation which paralyzes from the first chord, from the first vocal squirt.

The anger is just frightening, freezing. The US band proves that when it comes to sonic terror they have everything to become kings. Hell City in a few minutes irritates, hits, scrapes, and takes pleasure in watching us agonize and cum in this torrent of ultraviolence.

To discover Future Of Despair:

23. Old Nick – A New Generation Of Vampire Conspiracies
Dungeon Raw Black Metal
Grime Stone Records / Phantom Lure

Old Nick est cette pièce de Black Metal qui intrigue, révulse, attire et obsède.
En prenant le parti de ne jamais se confronter au sérieux du Raw Black Metal, cédant à la fantaisie et au grand-guignolesque mêlant échappées Synth, Xylophone, mélodies euphorisantes et voix de gobelins décérébrés.
Leur troisième album, est en cela le sommet , la synthèse la plus complète de leur univers. « A New Generation Of Vampire Conspiracies » réussit à garder un juste milieu entre le ridicule qui les ronge et le génie de composition indéniable de cette étrange formation.
Une sortie qui de par sa production plus soignée, met en lumière un savoir-faire ahurissant en matière de singularité et de créativité.
Les habituelles impénétrables saturations se contiennent et nous ouvrent la galaxie Old Nick avec maestria.

Et si, finalement, derrière ses horripaux carnavalesques, Old Nick ne serait-il pas l’un des sauveurs d’un Black Metal agonisant ?

Pour découvrir Old Nick :

Old Nick is that piece of Black Metal that intrigues, revolts, attracts and obsesses. By taking the party never to confront the seriousness of Raw Black Metal, giving in to the fantasy and the grand-guignolesque mixing Synth, Xylophone escapades, euphoric melodies and the voices of mindless goblins.
Their third album is a summit, the most complete synthesis of their universe. « A New Generation Of Vampire Conspiracies » manages to strike a balance between the ridiculousness that gnaws at them and the undeniable compositional genius of this strange formation.
A release which, through its more careful production, highlights astonishing know-how in terms of singularity and creativity. The usual impenetrable saturations are contained and we open up the Old Nick galaxy with mastery.

What if, in the end, behind his carnival horror stories, isn’t Old Nick one of the saviors of a dying Black Metal?

22. Sonic Demon – « Vendetta »
Acid Stoner Doom Metal
Majestic Mountain Records

Depuis que Devil’s Witches a révélé le filon de la Retro Fuzz, de nombreux groupes ont essayé de surfer sur la vague années 70 et stoner sous acide. Bien que souvent très réussis, il est difficile de trouver des formations ayant su tirer leur épingle du jeu et viser des ailleurs nouveaux.
Sonic Demon fait parti de l’exception déstructurant les modes et choisissant une inclinaison Raw, où les riffs deviennent tornades de fréquences, où la voix s’allume pour nous guider dans ce chaos où la fuzz dégouline de partout, ouvrant la porte des enfers. Un album jouissif qui se laisse écouter en boucle, jusqu’à faire fondre notre pavillon, transpercer nos tympans et arracher les cristaux définissant nos graves ainsi que nos aïgus.

Pour découvrir Sonic Demon :

Since Devil’s Witches revealed « il filone » of Retro Fuzz, many bands have tried to ride the ’70s wave and stoner on acid. Although often very successful, it is difficult to find bands that has succeeded and target new horizons.

Sonic Demon is part of the exception, deconstructing the modes and choosing a Raw uniform, where the riffs become tornadoes of frequencies, where the voice lights up to guide us in this chaos where fuzz is dripping from everywhere, opening the door to hell.
A delightful album that can be listened to in a loop, until our ears melt, pierces our eardrums and tears off the crystals defining our bass as well as our treble.

21. Cavalerie – « Hate Remains »
Raw Blackened Hardcore

Un peu plus d’un an après nous avoir écrasé la caboche à coup de gourdin, nous désarticulant à la manière d’une vieille carcasse, avec Spectral Rage Demo, Cavalerie revient pour infliger une nouvelle salve de coups à notre charogne qui se remettait déjà difficilement du premier assaut.

« Hate Remains » perd en texture ce qu’il gagne en acidité, ce premier EP est d’un tranchant et d’une rugosité effroyable. Venez faire l’expérience de l’abattoir, celui où le riff devient pistolet à tige perforante captive, où nous sommes traités comme du bétail, où nos terreurs d’abattage industrielle nous reviennent droit dans le jarret.

La violence sociétale jaillit de partout et Cavalerie a su saisir la substantifique moelle des maux de notre monde. Maintenant aurez-vous le courage de nous regarder dans la glace ?
« Fais gaffe à ton dos, protège tes abdos », ces paroles qui enflammaient Saint-Denis il y a bientôt deux décennies, rejaillissent et viennent nous chatouiller comme un jet de vitriol. Cavalerie a la hargne, préparez-vous, le combat sera sans merci.

A little year after having crushed our noggin with a medieval mass, disarticulating us like an old carcass, with Spectral Rage Demo, Cavalerie returns to inflict a new round of punch on our carrions which was already recovering hardly from the first assault.

« Hate Remains » loses in texture what it gains in acidity, this first EP is incredibly sharp and roughness. 20. Wild Fuzz Trip – « Distant Planet »

« Distant Planet », le nouvel EP de Wild Fuzz Trip nous porte aux confins du psychédélisme, à l’orée de la transe Doom, dans des territoires spatiaux perdus que l’on nomme merveilleusement « Interstellar Heavy Psych Doom ».

En seulement deux morceaux, le groupe originaire d’Espagne, complété par Andy de The King’s Pistol, nous plonge dans une liberté instrumentale qui touche et nous libère de toute pesanteur, nous plongeant dans l’instant présent, celui où les rêves prennent vies, où les angoisses futures et les drames passées sont d’ordre terrestre.

Pour découvrir Wild Fuzz Trip :

« Distant Planet », the new EP of Wild Fuzz Trip takes us to the confines of psychedelia, to the edge of the Doom trance, in lost space territories which we wonderfully call « Interstellar Heavy Psych Doom ».

In just two tracks, the band from Spain, completed by Andy from The King’s Pistol, plunges us into an instrumental freedom that touches and frees us from all heaviness, plunging us into the present moment, the one where dreams come to life, where future anxieties and past dramas are earthly, invisible.

19. Carivari – « Reset »
Annihilated Industrial Grindcore
No Good To Anyone Productions

Cela faisait quelques temps que vous cherchiez à prendre une grosse et belle déflagration sonique ?
Bon, ne cherchez plus, la machine Carivari est toute trouvée. A mi-chemin entre Ministry et Full Of Hell, la formation française est d’une pugnacité rare. L’album visite les extrêmes dans toutes ses latéralités, et nous laisse au sol, blême, vidé par une telle décharge.

Cette vague Industrial Grindcore est d’une violence inouïe, ne passez à côté sous aucun prétexte. Et si vous veniez à les rater, ils n’hésiteront pas à vous débusquer et à vous « balancer 56 grenades dessus ».

Pour découvrir Carivari :

Have you been looking for a big and beautiful sonic blast since a long time?
Well, stop your quest, the Carivari machine is all found. Halfway between Ministry and Full Of Hell, the French formation is made of a rare pugnacity. The album visits extremes in all its lateralities, and leaves us on the ground, pale, emptied by such a discharge.

This Industrial Grindcore wave is incredibly violent, don’t miss it. And if you did miss them, they won’t hesitate to hunt you down and « throw 56 grenades at you. »

Avec « Northland I & Northland II », édités chez Anesthetize pour l’Europe, Tassi propose un voyage à la fois onirique et ésotérique, à l’entre-monde, bercé par une poésie d’une grande délicatesse, ayant réussi à naître au travers de cet rencontre des univers, horizons entre Post-Black Metal, Shoegaze, Ambient et culture Bouddhiste.

Une oeuvre qui ne ressemble à aucune autre, une expédition sonore qui rappelle par sa modalité de lecture spiralaire Séjour Sur Les Monts Fuchun peint, entre 1348 et 1850 par Huang Gongwang, sur un rouleau de 7 mètres, laissant l’amateur se perdre dans un paysage qui semble infini. Un infini que Tassi nous propose de traverser pour atteindre un monde apaisé, sage entre Homme et Dieu.

Void Commander est arrivé sur la platine de Wombat Cult de manière assez inattendue. Un beau matin de février, aucune sortie ne caressait le tympan de votre rédacteur au visage de rongeur, les recherches étaient vaines, jusqu’à ce que Marco, le boss de Majestic Mountain Records ne vienne me parler de sa future sortie : Lord River de Void Commander.

Sans trop y croire, mais faisant confiance à Marco, la commande est passée. Quelques semaines plus tard, le disque est sur mon palier, je le dépose sur ma Thorens. La courroie s’échauffe, les premières notes résonnent et délivrent une rencontre assez intéressante entre Black Sabbath et Goatsnake.

Les morceaux se suivent, sans se ressembler et très rapidement Void Commander m’embarque dans leur forêt aux reliefs Stoner / Doom et accents 70s.
Sans jamais devenir une grossière copie, sans jamais souligner ses parentés, l’album de Void Commander se pose telle une synthèse experte et exquise que l’on n’attendait plus, où certains paysages sonores qui semblaient pillés depuis de nombreuses années, se trouvent aujourd’hui et plus que jamais verdoyants et inspirants. Un incontournable.

Void Commander arrived on the Wombat Cult HQ in an unexpectedly way. One February morning, no release caressed the eardrum of your Wombat digger writer. The research was vain, until Marco, the boss of Majestic Mountain Records came to speak about the future release of his label: « Lord River » by Void Commander.

Without really believing it, but trusting Marco, the order is placed. A few weeks later, the vinyl is at home, I put it on my Thorens. The belt heats up, the first notes ring out and deliver a rather interesting encounter between Black Sabbath and Goatsnake.

The songs follow easily, one by one , without resembling each other and very quickly Void Commander takes me into their forest with Stoner / Doom reliefs and 70s accents.

Depuis Sunbather, chaque sortie de Deafheaven était une petite déception, ils ne nous ont pas surpris et le concept était de moins en moins ambitieux, le gigantesque espoir après Sunbather n’est jamais devenu une réalité. Mais avec Infinite Granite, le groupe américain redonne des sensations fortes, sensibles et subtiles.
On ne pouvait pas imaginer ça, l’album ouvre une autre dimension ici le Black Metal est un fantôme et le Shoegaze une base solide. Ce nouvel album est une explosion d’émotions, un rendez-vous avec l’inconnu.

Il y a de cela trois ans, j’étais au travail, face au photocopieur, Bolzer dans une oreille et mes collègues dans l’autre. La radio en fond comblait le spectre sonore de la pièce, puis une voix, cristalline, aux mots si bien choisis, pensés, vint couper mes réflexions. Juliette Armanet venait de prendre possession de mon coeur, de mes joies et de mes larmes. Trois années passèrent sans aucun bruit autour de l’artiste, laissant derrière elle un unique album « Petite Amie ».

Aujourd’hui, tout droit revenue des flammes Juliette Armanet nous offre « Brûler Le Feu » un poème envoûtant sur l’amour, le deuil des coeurs, et le printemps des âmes.
La chanson française tient enfn une nouvelle grande parolière, une compositrice de génie et une voix qui ensorcelle pour porter nos peines et nos rires, nos soupirs et nos cris. Merci.

Une rencontre des genres qui n’est pas inédit, mais que No One maîtrise avec virtuosité.

Demo II est la promesse d’un ailleurs qui fascine, que l’on apprend à connaître et se révèle à chaque écoute un peu plus envoûtant. Il n’y a pas une sortie de TSJTTN qui ne déçoit, mais Demo II fait bien plus, elle nous transcende et nous plonge dans des images oubliées, aux confins de nos âmes.

Koldovstvo a tout d’un mirage au cœur de cette année sans concerts, sans rencontres avec le public, où toute la survie et la naissance des groupes se sont jouées autour de la promotion sur les réseaux sociaux.
En s’alliant Extraconscious Record, Folkvangr Records et Babylon Doom Cult, ont su révéler Koldovstvo, sombre lumière dont nous ne connaissons que très peu de choses à l’exception de leur artwork et de l’usage de l’alphabet cyrillique.
Le mystère est total, tapissant nos esprits, concevant un long couloir plongé dans l’obscurité au bout duquel une lueur celle des incantations et des rites d’autrefois laissent échapper un souffle mystique, à la fois accueillant et traumatisant.
Les sonorités saturées et bouchées, mêlées à cette atmosphère folk, à la fureur d’un Black Metal cru, font de ce premier album de Koldovstvo un véritable miracle, nous attirant telle une datcha gourmande, nous transformant en Hansel ou bien Gretel, pour nous emprisonner à jamais. Incontournable.

Koldovstvo has all of a mirage at the heart of this year without concerts, without meetings with the public, where all the survival and birth of band have been played around promotion on social networks.
By joining forces with Extraconscious Record, Folkvangr Records and Babylon Doom Cult, they were able to reveal Koldovstvo, a dark light about which we know very little informations except their artwork and the use of the Cyrillic alphabet.
The mystery is total, lining our minds, designing a long corridor plunged into darkness at the end of which a glow that of the incantations and rites of old times let escape a mystical breath, both welcoming and traumatic.
The saturated and clogged sounds, mixed with this folk atmosphere, with the fury of a raw Black Metal, make this first Koldovstvo album a real miracle, attracting us like a greedy dacha, transforming us into Hansel or Gretel, and imprisoning us forever. Unavoidable.

Chez Wombat Cult, nous n’avons pas l’oreille taillée pour la scène Metalcore. L’appétit n’y est pas et l’engouement se fait quelque peu limité.Cette année, Wombat Cult s’est lancé dans l’aventure de la souscription Pelagic Records. Une voie qui a définitivement poussé les frontières des nos explorations soniques et Hippotraktor s’impose comme un incontournable, un diamant brut que nous ne pouvions imaginer. Il est d’ailleurs difficile d’utiliser les bons mots pour cette expérience qui a su nous porter sur de nouvelles terres.

La première écoute, bien que difficile, le temps de s’acclimater au chant, nous enserre, nous emprisonne avec un petit goût de « Reviens-y » qui à force de jours et de nuits se transformera en obsession, révélant les mille facettes d’un album qui résonnera à travers les années de par ses rythmiques hypnotiques et de ses arrangements qui estomaquent. Vous y reviendrez, assurément.

At Wombat Cult, there’s not a big addiction to the Metalcore scene. The appetite is not there and the excitement is very limited. This year, Wombat Cult embarked on the adventure of subscribing to Pelagic Records. A path that has definitely pushed the boundaries of our sonic explorations and Hippotraktor establishes itself as a must-have, a rough diamond that we could not imagine.


It is difficult to use the right words for this experience, which has taken us to new lands. The first listening, although difficult, the time to acclimatize to the vocals, encloses us, imprisons us with a little taste of « Come back honey » which through days and nights will turn into obsession, revealing the thousand facets of an album that will resonate through the years with its hypnotic rhythms and its stunning arrangements. 7. Jointhugger – « Reaper Season » & « Surrounded By Vultures »

Cette année Jointhugger aura été actif sur tous les plans, à la fois productifs en studio, avec deux sorties, mais également sur scène, au Hostsabbat.
Avec un EP sorti en début d’année et un album récemment paru, le trio osloïte a su se démarquer de la scène Doom Metal et intégrer une vision assez singulière, toute en nuances, laissant transparaître la maîtrise et le savoir-faire de ses membres.

Il est difficile aujourd’hui de séparer les deux sorties du groupe tant elles semblent complémentaires. Reaper Season, avec son unique morceau de 18 minutes, aux sonorités Raw, Psychédélique, Underground et au refrain pourtant fédérateur, vient installer et fixer l’identité de la formation, affirmant ce que « I Am No One », avait pu nous faire percevoir. L’EP dépasse tout conformisme cherchant le plaisir de l’improvisation, permettant aux notes de respirer, de danser dans cet amas sonique sidérant où la seule règle est la créativité.

Jointhugger s’affranchit des lois du genre et conçoit une nouvelle direction : Raw Psychedelic Smooth and Groove Doom Metal.Une vision qui touche aux cieux avec « Surrounded By Vultures », qui tout en clair-obscur nous prend par la main et nous guide dans ce dédale aux lois nouvelles, où seul le groupe sait éclairer le chemin. Un grand nom est en train de naître. Fascinant, Étourdissant.

This year Jointhugger will have been active on all fronts, both productive in the studio, with two releases, but also on stage, at the Hostsabbat.
With an EP released at the beginning of the year and a recent album released in October, the Oslo trio has stood out from the Doom Metal scene and integrated a rather singular vision, all in nuances, revealing the mastery and musical knowledge of its members.

It is difficult today to separate the two releases of the group as they seem to be complementary. Reaper Season, with his unique 18-minutes track, which reveals Raw, Psychedelic, Underground sonorities and a federating chorus, comes to install and fix the identity of the band, affirming the blood of « I Am No One ». Depuis déjà trois ans, Wormsand parcourt les routes pour infliger une dose de leur Sludge/Doom puissant, radical, accompagné d’un EP, qui permettait de saisir la proposition, la force mais également les formes nouvelles travaillées avec acharnement pour offrir de nouveaux codes, de nouvelles lectures d’un genre qui semble parfois se mordre la queue.

Avec Shapeless Mass, leur premier album, le trio du Sud-Est de la France revient justement d’une longue et fascinante année d’expérimentations à la fois sonores et visuelles et parvient à tirer jusqu’à nous les formes disparates, horizons lointains, jusqu’à nos oreilles pour révéler Wormsand à travers un travail d’orfèvrerie rare, faisant briller des facettes insoupçonnées, insoupçonnables, mais pourtant désormais essentielles.

En trois courtes mais productives années, Revenant Marquis a su tracer une piste vierge assez étonnante sur la scène Black Metal.
Ce mystérieux One-Man Ban originaire du Royaume-Uni a bâti sa chapelle sur une interprétation jusqu’au-boutiste et nauséeuse de la frange Raw Black Metal. Une vision qui dans son approche lofi et minimaliste vient nous plonger dans une détresse assez inédite, venant immoler la moindre cellule encore saine de nos êtres.
« Below The Landsker Line » est certainement le pourisoire le plus raffiné que Revenant Marquis a pu proposer jusqu’ici, portat notre psyché vers des contrées torturées, sordides, nauséabondes, s’affranchissant de toute ingéniosité technique, servant les lambeaux du réel, comme un ta de sonorités pourrissantes, souillées, sur nos dépouilles décharnées de tout espoir.

Sparks a travaillé depuis de nombreuses années autour de la nouvelle cathédrale de Leos Carax : Annette.
Une comédie musicale présentée à Cannes, ayant remporté le prix de mise en scène. Après une collaboration avec Jacques Tati abandonnée et une autre aventure avec Tim Burton avortée, le duo de Pop Avant-Gardiste tient enfin son ticket pour le septième art et nous ensorcelle.

Porté par les voix fascinantes de Adam Driver et Marion Cotillard, la composition des Sparks n’avait plus autant resplendi depuis plus de deux décennies. Les airs et mélodies deviennent des clés pour ouvrir nos âmes, et accèder aux cieux tout comme aux abysses. Une fable sur l’humain qui dépasse de loin toutes nos attentes.

Au cours d’une année 2020 marquée par le chaos qu’il soit sanitaire, économique et social, qu’il n’est en rien utile de rappeler, car connue de tous, il est parfois bon de revenir sur des mois certes éloignés de la scène, de l’attraction sonore, vibratoire, parfois abrupte, brusque tout comme contemplative, émotionnelle ou tout simplement effrayante et euphorisante, en se souvenant d’un année 2020 d’une richesse musicale inouïe.
Loin du sentier difficile mais fascinant des tournées, de l’excitation de la foule qui éructe, s’émerveille, les artistes de tous horizons n’ont cessé de créer, penser leur musique.
Une année intermède qui aura permis à de nombreuses formations de se lancer telles que Las Historias, Plague Organ, Jointhugger, Moonstone, Malsten, Spiralpark, Pilori, Hadewijch ou encore Cavalerie.
Une année qui aura su révéler de nouvelles sonorités permettant la rencontre d’artistes de divers horizons qu’il s’agisse de Thou et Emma Ruth Rundle à Full Of Hell et Health, en passant par Bell Witch et Aerial Ruin, les frontières, barrières classificatoires, n’ont cessé de se mouvoir pour laisser apparaître un avenir aux sonorités nouvelles, qui espérons le saura raisonner/résonner au cœur de l’actualité mondiale, pour ouvrir des voies de vies alternatives à la rencontre de nos proches qu’il s’agisse de l’humain comme de la nature et ses mille merveilles.
Une année qui, enfin, aura su voir des artistes s’approprier l’atmosphère des mois qui se sont succédés pour changer, développer leurs paroles artistiques et se révéler marqueurs temporels, témoins de l’histoire comme Kadavar avec The Isolation Tapes ou encore l’extraordinaire proposition de GOLD avec leur compilation Recession refermant le diamant brut The Isolation Sessions.
Au-delà de ces sorties, artistes, qui nous ont permis de tenir en tant que gardien essentiel de nos âmes, de nos réflexions, nous souhaiterions revenir sur cette année au dessein quelque peu particulier avec une image, celle de trente albums qui ont su nous porter, nous supporter.

Notre platine a eu l’immense honneur de faire tourner ce diptyque, durant plusieurs jours, plongeant la salle d’écoute dans le chaos le plus total. Old Man Gloom réussit de nouveau à déconstruire la scène underground dans toutes ses extrémités, pour nous proposer une oeuvre abstraite mêlant musique expérimentale à tendance Noise, Sludge et Post-Doom.

Après deux collaborations d’une violence inouïe avec The Body, Uniform, formation Noise Rock, tout droit venu des US revient nous écraser la mâchoire, de manière abrupte presque animale, contre le caniveau.
L’énergie Punk qui suinte de chaque riff, faisant la renommée du groupe, est particulièrement vile venant s’incruster dans nos tympans, pour les ronger à grand coup de crasse sonore.
La proposition est éprouvante et les 34 minutes de « Shame », portent le groupe en figure de proue du genre venant jouer du coude avec Unsane.
Une oeuvre que rien ne semble pouvoir arrêter se terminant par le titre « I Am Cancer », monument de violence qu’Uniform vient ériger en conclusion d’un album déjà incontournable dans la carrière du groupe.

Un exercice de style redoutable où la magie opère dans la collaboration entre les deux artistes, se fondant l’un dans l’autre, d’un Post-Folk aux allures de fin du monde de ERR au brouillard boueux amplifié du collectif de Bâton-Rouge, mêlant leurs patrimoines sonores afin de mettre en lumière un travail d’une finesse d’écriture rare.

Cénotaphe, projet tenu par Khaosgott et Fog, ne cesse de s’élever en porte-étendard de la scène Underground Black Metal française. La voix de Khaosgott, découverte sur les incontournables EP Atavisme et Ostara de Nécropole, s’est affinée dans sa radicalité et vient nous prendre aux tripes, portant la détresse et l’agonie dans la moindre de ses vocalises, assénant à l’auditeur une sensation d’oppression à la fois redoutable et délectable, renforcée par les guitares tranchantes associées aux Blast Beat envoûtés du multi-instrumentiste Fog.
Une expérience éprouvante mais nécessaire dans la quête de vérité acharnée de Cénotaphe : un sommet.

Le voyage est immédiat. Dès que les premières nappes sonores de Camionaut retentissent, l’appel de l’inconnu devient inévitable.
Les accords bouillent de toutes part, la batterie dans sa répétitivité captive l’esprit. Le groupe italien connaît les moindres recettes pour libérer les pensées de l’auditeur dans des méandres d’effets à base de Fuzz. Après avoir marqué les esprits en 2019 avec Tårn, Ruff Majik revient de son Afrique du Sud natal pour frapper de manière directe et efficace avec une série de morceaux tous plus colérico-hystériques les uns que les autres avec The Devil’s Cattle.
Le groupe semble aussi énervé que le taureau ornant sa pochette, laissant un multitude de voix aux multiples tonalités, avec entre autres un ersatz d’Axl Rose sous acides, pour accompagner et multiplier les impacts d’une composition qui en laissera plus d’un sur les rotules.

Totalement passé sous les radars de Wombat Cult à sa sortie, bien qu’avec une place prédominante dans la Doom Charts, et un retour critique audiophile unanime, il aura fallu les séances de rattrapage de cette fin d’année pour se rendre compte que Bogwife vient de pondre une nouvelle manière de jouer du Doom.
Croisant à la fois la force brute d’un Conan sous anxiolytique, faisant trembler tout ce qui pourrait se trouver sur le chemin des vibrations, à un chant et une guitare solo menée à un rythme plus décroché dans une approche soutenue, Bogwife réussit à créer une dimension parallèle dans laquelle le groupe excelle venant réveiller les amateurs de musiques pachydermiques et ronflantes avec cette fois-ci une approche nouvelle qui risque d’ouvrir un bon nombre de portes à la scène Stoner/Doom qui en avait grand besoin.

Le labyrinthe que nous propose Mestarin kynsi à base de Kraut-Rock expérimental aux couleurs rugueuses d’un Black Metal dément dépasse toutes les attentes et vient nous tourmenter comme peu d’album peuvent se targuer d’y parvenir.
Une expérience d’errance où Oranssi Pazuzu s’amuse à nous guider dans l’obscurité avec de légers reflets, de fines pistes, vers des univers où la folie semble être le maître mot.

Éons de Neptunian Maximalism, tenant sur pas moins de trois vinyles, est une expérimentation autour d’une multitude de genres et sous-genres formant un album conceptuel tout bonnement transcendantal entre Jazz, Drone, Doom et travaux psychédéliques.
Une expédition occulte, ésotérique et ritualiste au cœur d’une bête qui nécessitera plusieurs semaines et mois afin de bien la cerner.
En trois parties, Neptunian Maximalism réussit à prouver qu’il est et sera toujours possible de trouver de nouvelles sonorités et approches dans la création musicale, à la seule condition de s’affranchir des codes et se laisser à une liberté créatrice aveugle, dévoilant les contours d’une montagne, invisible, qui jusqu’à ce jour se dissimulait, face à nous, dans une lumière aveuglante, geôlière de nos inspirations.

9. Vestsjysk Orken – « Full Dark No Stars »

Vestsjysk Orken est l’une de ces formations qui ont su passer sous tous les radars et qui pourtant méritent qu’on s’y intéresse. Après un premier album mariant cinéphilie et amour du Doom instrumental, le groupe polonais propose son second voyage spatial et réussit une fois de plus à convaincre.
On prend un plaisir incroyable à se perdre dans ce dédale psyche cosmique. Parfois inégal dans sa proposition, Vestsjysk Orken a assez d’ideés derrière sa fuzz pour ne jamais nous perdre, nous guidant à travers l’univers et on ne peut que les en remercier.

Vestsjysk Orken is one of those bands that has been able to go under all radar and yet deserves attention. After a first album marrying cinephilia and love of instrumental cosmic Doom, the Polish band offers its second space trip and once again succeeds in convincing.

8. Dopelord – « Sign Of The Devil »

Dopelord a su au cours des dernières années s’affirmer comme groupe majeur sur la scène Doom internationale.
La formation polonaise a su fédérer autour de ses thématiques mêlant magie noire, secte et usage de drogues. Le nouvel album était attendu au tournant après un « Children Of The Haze », convaincant sans pour autant être transcendant. Néanmoins, n’ayez plus aucune crainte car la nouvelle offrande « Sign Of The Devil » est une mine d’or en matière d’efficacité. Agissant à la manière d’un rouleau-compresseur, Dopelord tient son cap et nous laisse dans la fange et au cœur de la peste noire sur fond de rythmique D-Beat.
Lorsque la platine s’arrête, il ne reste plus qu’une chose à faire, recommencer l’expérience jusqu’à ce que les vibrations entament notre ossature.

Dopelord has known in recent years to assert itself as a major group on the international Doom scene. The Polish formation has managed to unite around its themes mixing black magic, sect and drug using.
The new album was expected at the turn after a « Children Of The Haze, convincing without being transcendent. Nevertheless, have no fear because the new offering » Sign Of The Devil « is a gold mine in terms of Acting like a steamroller, Dopelord holds its course and leaves us in the mire and the spectrum in black plague against the backdrop of D-Beat rhythm.
When the turntable stops, there is only one thing left to do, repeat the experiment until the vibrations start our frame.

7. Old Man Gloom -« Seminar VIII : Light Of Meaning »

Old Man Gloom est de retour 6 ans après son double album « The Ape Of God I » et « The Ape Of God II », avec de nouveau un double album se présentant de la manière suivante « Seminar VIII : Light Of Meaning » et « Seminar IX : Darkness Of Being ».
Notre platine a eu l’immense honneur de faire tourner « Seminar VIII : Light Of Meaning », durant plusieurs jours, plongeant la salle d’écoute dans le chaos le plus total. Old Man Gloom réussit de nouveau à déconstruire la scène underground dans toutes ses extrémités, pour nous proposer une oeuvre abstraite mêlant musique expérimentale à tendance Noise, Sludge et Post-Doom.
On ne peut que trépigner d’impatience de pauser nos oreilles sur la suite de l’aventure, guettant la boîte aux lettres, afin de sombrer de manière totale dans une atmosphère schizoïde dont nous ne ressortirons certainement pas indemne.

6. Revenge – « Strike. Smother. Dehumanize. »

La nouveauté, le changement semblent deux concepts qui ne vont guère à la légende du War Black Metal. La méthode de composition et la proposition semblent ne pas avoir changé et c’est tout ce que l’on pouvait attendre du nouvel album de Revenge.
La colère, la rage et le nihilisme du groupe semble toujours aussi flamboyants bien que plus contrôlés. Alors si vous ne pouvez vous retenir de gesticuler et hurler face aux traditionnels blastbeats de James Read et aux chaotiques enchaînements de riffs de Vermin alors votre chemin est tout tracé, il ne vous reste plus qu’à célébrer le vingtième anniversaire de la formation en vous battant pour mettre la main ce nouveau disque.

Alors le premier album de la formation suédoise est la solution. Le groupe propose un retour à l’essentiel et se met à nu pour se consacrer à la chose la plus importante : le Riff.
Oubliez donc les derniers albums de Kadavar, bien que maîtrisés, vous avez la nouvelle référence et elle s’appelle Sleepwulf !

« Psychedelic Backfire I » est un enregistrement live qui stupéfait de par sa maîtrise à la fois instrumentale et intellectuelle de la scène scène psychédélique. Elephant9 nous fait pénétrer dans son univers riche et hypnotique.

Jointhugger – I Am No One
	


	

		

Jointhugger, trio osloïte, fondé en 2012 dévoile son premier album « I Am No One » après une première démo assez discrète « Daemo EP« , sortie en 2019. 





Il y a un an, avec cette première demo, nous pouvions entrapercevoir une formation quasi-instrumentale avec de la suite derrière les idées. Regorgeant de morceaux fascinants tels que « Empty Space » ou encore l’entraînant et désormais incontournable « I Am No One ».  Cependant, la qualité sonore proposée n’était pas encore à la hauteur de leur puissance de composition. Tirant par moment trop fortement sur les aigus, le manque de basse se faisait ressentir, laissant l’auditeur avec une écoute moindre. 





Mai 2020, tout juste un an après leur premier effort, le groupe est de retour et signe chez Interstellar Smoke Records pour une sortie physique. L’éditeur polonais, désormais célèbre dans la sphère Stoner/Doom internationale, propose une très belle édition vinyle. 





L’album « I Am No One » de Jointhugger est constitué de quatre morceaux. Chaque face du vinyle contient deux morceaux dont deux réenregistrements issus de la démo, on retrouve l’hymne « I Am No One » sur la face A ainsi que le redoutable et pachydermique « Domen » sur la Face B. 





Le morceau « In Dire Of Fire Ch.1 » ouvre les hostilités et donne à l’auditeur toutes les raisons de se réjouir. En un morceau, le groupe norvégien définit à la fois son empreinte musicale mais également sa nouvelle puissance de fuzz. La scène psyche-doom n’a pas autant groové depuis plusieurs années. Enchaînant les séquences cleans aux phases saturées, Joithugger ne cesse de propulser ses morceaux, leur donnant à la fois une certaine complexité mais également un groove comme il est rare d’en dégoter. Les changements rythmiques permettent une constante réinvention du morceau faisant  de Jointhugger une intelligente formation dans la création d’images sonores. Les influences presque jazz de la composition offrent une subtile découverte avec ce morceau d’ouverture. Lorsque la dernière note résonne nous n’attendons plus qu’une chose, le chapitre deux de ce « In Dire Of Fire Ch.1« , espérons que nous pourrons le découvrir prochainement. 





L’album enchaîne ensuite avec le morceau titre « I Am No One« . Découvert sur leur démo, le morceau prend ici toute son ampleur,  lui conférant une dimension interstellaire nihiliste sans précédant. Le chant y règne en maître, tapissé dans l’obscurité, scandant l’hymne incontournable du groupe « I am no one and I am all. I’m not just one individual. I am the universe and it is me. We are like one and we will always be. » Le morceau ne cesse de nous bousculer qu’il s’agisse de par ses nappes sonores unissant guitare et basse ou encore de sa charge armée d’une double pédale à la batterie. En un mot, la face A se conclut avec une puissance dont vous ne sortirez pas indemne. 





La suite du périple s’effectue sous forme de retrouvailles avec le morceau « Domen« , que nous pouvions trouver en ouverture de la démo. Le morceau qui était porteur de promesses sur ce premier effort, se trouve ici littéralement transformé, respire et vit comme nous n’aurions pu l’imaginer. 





 Pour conclure l’album, Jointhugger nous propose une nouvelle composition d’environ onze minutes qui permet de comprendre les influences du trio. « Nighfright » ne peut fermer les yeux sur son ancêtre qu’est Sleep. Une sorte de Holy Mountain tombé au beau de la fontaine de jouvence. Ce morceau de clôture est un vrai voyage temporel tant il nous porte de l’origine du genre jusqu’à sa plus grande modernité dans les ultimes fréquences de ce premier chapitre.





Jointhugger avec ce premier album « I Am No One« , montre sa capacité à comprendre l’entièreté de la scène Doom, à se l’approprier et réussit ainsi à proposer une oeuvre nouvelle, quasi chimérique à la manière de son artwork. Jointhugger, a trio from Oslo, founded in 2012 unveils their first album « I Am No One » after a fairly discreet first demo « Daemo EP« , released in 2019.





One year ago, with this first demo, we could catch a glimpse of a quasi-instrumental formation with many vibrating ideas. Full of fascinating songs such as « Empty Space » or even catchy and now unavoidable « I Am No One« . However, the sound quality offered was not to the level of their compositional power. Sometimes pulling too hard on the treble, the lack of bass was felt, leaving the listener in a little chaos. 





May 2020, just one year after their first Demo, the band is back and signs with Interstellar Smoke Records for a physical release. The Polish label, now famous in the international Stoner / Doom sphere, offers a very beautiful vinyl edition.





Jointhugger’s album « I Am No One » is a 4 songs LP. Each side of the vinyl contains two songs including two re-recordings from the demo, we find the anthem « I Am No One » on side A as well as the pachydermic « Domen » on Side B.





The song « In Dire Of Fire Ch.1 » opens hostilities and gives the listener every reason to rejoice. In one shot, the Norwegian band defines both its musical imprint but also its new power of fuzz. The psyche-doom scene hasn’t grooved as much for several years. Chaining clean sequences with saturated phases, Joithugger continues to propel his songs, giving them both a certain complexity but also a groove as it is rare to find. The rhythmic changes allow a constant reinvention of the song making Jointhugger an intelligent formation in the creation of sound images. The jazz influences of the composition offer a subtle discovery with this opening track. When the last note sounds we are just waiting for one thing, chapter two of this « In Dire Of Fire Ch.1« , hope we will not waiting so long.





The album continues with the title track « I Am No One« . Discovered on their demo, the song takes all his fullness here, giving it an unprecedented nihilistic interstellar dimension. The sing part is like an evil conqueror, carpeted in darkness, chanting the unavoidable anthem of the group « I am no one and I am all. I’m not just one individual. I am the universe and it is me. We are like one and we will always be.  » The song does not stop jostling us whether it is through its sound layers uniting guitar and bass or its charge armed with a double pedal on the drums. In a word, side A ends with a power from which you will not come out unscathed.





The second part of the LP takes the form of a reunion with the song « Domen« , which we could find at the opening of the demo. The piece which carried promises on this first effort, is here literally transformed, breathes and lives as we could not have imagined. 





To conclude the album, Jointhugger offers us a new composition of about eleven minutes which allows us to understand the influences of the trio. « Nighfright » cannot turn a blind eye to its ancestor, Sleep. A kind of Holy Mountain fallen in the beauty of the fountain of youth. This closing piece is a real temporal trip as it takes us from the origin of the genre to its greatest modernity in the final frequencies of this first chapter.






Jointhugger with this first album « I Am No One« , shows his ability to understand the entire Doom scene, to appropriate it and thus succeeds in proposing a new work, almost chimerical in the manner of his artwork.
